John 21:1-14

Today’s Gospel… this is the Gospel where Jesus appears to the disciples by the Sea of Tiberias. There were 7 fishing in the boat when Jesus was by the shore with a charcoal fire. These 7 were Peter/Thomas/Nathanael/James/John and 2 others whose names are not listed.

My questions are:
  1. “Why are the names of the 2 other disciples not given”?
  2. "Were these 2 disciples Apostles? (ie one of 6 other Apostles Andrew/Philip/Matthew/James/Jude/Simon?)
My interpretation is that the 2 disciples were not one of the other 6 Apostles, otherwise their names would have been given. I believe these disciples were followers of Jesus but not Apostles.

I think it’s simple. John did not remember who the other two were.

There was evidence that the “Witness Protection Program” originated in ancient Israel. That could explain the anonymity of these two. 😉

But seriously, I’m not sure why the two aren’t listed.

Maybe, and maybe not…
When John refers to ‘another disciple’ he is usually either refering to himself, or possibly to Mary Magdalene.
There wre female disciples, how else could the word have been given to womankind directly? It is just that the mission to men is the one recorded in the writings. The mission to women was only saved in tradition.

Incidentally, you might like to see this reading, as it was in the Codex Fuldensis, using DR to translate congruent Vulgate text.
