John 3(16)
3:1 a man of the Pharisees.*
-Jesus knew he was a Pharisee and presupposed he followed mosaic law?
3:2 Nicode’mus came to see Jesus at night.*
-Was Jesus still with a crowd by night or alone possible with just the 12 apostles?
-why did Nicode’mus come at night? It would seem that this was a private conversation he wanted.*
-Nicode’mus recognizes that God is with Jesus.*
3:3 Jesus tells Nicode’mus that one must be born anew to see the kingdom*
-To “see the kingdom” means to literally see what Jesus brought, and not what the Jews wanted from the messiah. In other words, to see, means to understand this revelation of the restoration of the davidic kingdom.
3:4 Nicode’mus *doesn’t understand what Jesus means, and confuses it with actually being born, again.
3:5 Jesus clarifies by saying that unless one is born of water(baptism) and spirit(faith in the Christ{the messiah})*
So far Jesus, presupposing that Nicode’mus already following mosaic law, in a private, just for nicode’mus’s sake kind of conversation tells Nicode’mus that he must be baptized, and accept that he is messiah, in order to enter the kingdom.*
3:6 born of flesh is flesh, spirit is spirit. Jesus further clarifies the need for spiritual rebirth by means of faith in the messiah.
3:7 Jesus says don’t think about it, just get baptized. No discussion on this subject.*
3:8 the wind blows where it wills, aka the spirit guides by Gods will and not even those who would follow Jesus’s teachings can fully know the will of God but they can indeed see it.*
3:9 Nicode’mus doesn’t understand how that can be.*
3:10 Jesus questions Nicode’mus, asking as a scholar of scripture, *how he can’t get the point.
3:11 Jesus tries to tells Nicode’mus to rest assured, that He knows Gods.
3:12 Jesus states that if Nicode’mus doesn’t trust his words on simple matters, why would he trust him on matters that require faith.*
3:13 Jesus tells Nicode’mus that no one knows as well as he does, the will of God.*

3:14,15 & 16 *Jesus explains the will of God regarding the need for a messiah.
So my point is, throughout this short, personal conversation in the middle of the night, Jesus is trying to teach a Pharisee; a man who follows mosaic law, what I mean by this is, are we to presuppose that he lived a life of works and that all he must do further to achieve salvation, is to accept Jesus as the messiah?
