This was the reading this past Sunday, and the priest talked about an interpretation that I had never heard before today. He said that the woman was not an adulteress and that the husbands are the gods of Baal that the Samaritans worshipped alongside of God. He also said that the fact that she went out for water so late in the day was not evidence for anything. He also topped it off by calling her the first Christian missionary.
So is any of this real? Normally I wouldn’t be suspicious but this is a very permissive priest, the kind who makes jokes at the start of Mass and during the announcements. So I wanted to know if this is in line with Catholic interpretation.
