Why does the Douay-Rheims version differ from the NAB?

NAB’s John 6:66 is D-R’s John 6:67.

Likewise, the Douay-Rheims Isaiah 9:6 is the NAB’s Isaiah 9:5. In fact, I’ve checked this against other English-language translations, including the NASB, KJV, NKJV and NIV, and the NAB is the only one that moves this verse from 9:6 to 9:5.

In the case of the verse you specified, the DRB is the one uses a different numbering than the others I mentioned above in my Isaiah example.

Remember that verse numbers aren’t inspired, and didn’t exist in the manuscripts. It would certainly be helpful if all these translations used the same numbering scheme, but it isn’t completely necessary.

Yeah, I know verse numbers aren’t inspired. But I was just wondering why the discrepancy.

Well, where do the two translations diverge? Maybe you can find a hint there on why there’s a difference.

The different manuscripts of the bible included different passages. Some bibles just put a foot note in there about the issue, I think that the Douay-Rheims included them, and then changed the verse numbering to reflect this.

Keep in mind, that the numbering of verses and chapters was not standardized at the time the Douay was translated. Since that time, there has been a move toward this, but since the numbers are simply an artificial construct, to make “navigating” the Bible easier, it is still true that some Bibles are slightly varying from others…

John 6:66 is different because the D-R splits up John 6:51 into two verses, whereas the other translations do not. The rest of John 6 which follows has to maintain the numbering, so that it why John 6:66 is numbered as John 6:67 in the D-R. Here’s where the split occurs:
(DRB) I am the living bread which came down from heaven. (6:52) If any man eat of this bread, he shall live for ever: and the bread that I will give is my flesh, for the life of the world.
(ESV) I am the living bread that came down from heaven. If anyone eats of this bread, he will live forever. And the bread that I will give for the life of the world is my flesh."
(ISV) I am the living bread that came down from heaven. If anyone eats this bread, he will live forever. And the bread I will give for the life of the world is my flesh."
(KJV-1611) I am the liuing bread, which came downe from heauen. If any man eate of this bread, he shall liue for euer: and the bread that I will giue, is my flesh, which I will giue for the life of the world.
(KJV) I am the living bread which came down from heaven: if any man eat of this bread, he shall live for ever: and the bread that I will give is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world.
(MKJV) I am the Living Bread which came down from Heaven. If anyone eats of this Bread, he shall live forever. And truly the bread that I will give is My flesh, which I will give for the life of the world.
(MSG) I am the Bread–living Bread!–who came down out of heaven. Anyone who eats this Bread will live–and forever! The Bread that I present to the world so that it can eat and live is myself, this flesh-and-blood self."
(NAS77) “I am the living bread that came down out of heaven; if anyone eats of this bread, he shall live forever; and the bread also which I shall give for the life of the world is My flesh.”
(NASB) “I am the living bread that came down out of heaven; if anyone eats of this bread, he will live forever; and the bread also which I will give for the life of the world is My flesh.”
(NET) I am the living bread that came down from heaven. If anyone eats from this bread he will live forever. The bread78 that I will give for the life of the world is my flesh."
(RV) “I am the living bread which came down out of heaven: if any man eat of this bread, he shall live for ever: yea and the bread which I will give is my flesh, for the life of the world.
I am the living bread that came down from heaven. If anyone eats of this bread, he will live forever. This bread is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world.”
(RSV) “I am the living bread which came down from heaven; if any one eats of this bread, he will live for ever; and the bread which I shall give for the life of the world is my flesh.”
(NIV) “I am the living bread that came down from heaven. If anyone eats of this bread, he will live forever. This bread is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world.”

lak, thanks for the detailed explanation! I did a side-by-side comparison of several translations using BibleGateway, but I didn’t go into the detail that you did - very helpful!

I’m glad I was able to help.🙂

Hello,

I always found this very coincidentally interesting. In another work of John, the Apocalypse, it describes the beast that will come and do nasty stuff to the world. And what is the beast’s identification? The number 666. In John’s Gospel verse 6:66 describes the apostasy of some of Christ’s disciples over disbelief in the Real Presence.

I just found that connection interesting - a link between Satan’s attack upon mankind and lack of belief in Christ’s Real Presence. :hmmm:
