Lord Acton was thoroughly Catholic, and held unity with the Church most important. He wasn’t excommunicated because he never stood his ground against the Church, rather he tended to refrain from addressing the areas where he disagreed with the Church.

As far as the Acton Institute, Lord Acton was a bright star in classical Liberal thought (NB: more akin to Libertarian principles than to modern Liberal thought). He advocated for individual dignity, freedom, and rights as the best way to a just and moral society. As a historian he dealt extensively with the interaction between religion and government, and encouraged the public witness of the Faith.

That said, I think the economics he endorsed falls short of what should be our ideal, and obviously disagree with his position contra infallibility. The Acton Institute does a great deal of good in promoting a Christian view of liberty, but is still steeped in the intellectualism of its eponymous inspiration.

I would have voted NO to that name at a board meeting. It is too contraversial for a Catholic organization. Hopefully, this was not an influence as they are promoting ecumenism, which is good but, we have to stand our grounds.

I’ve attended a few of their events and while the differences between Christians is downplayed, they are a political/economic think tank much more than anything else.

I think the distributists were right until as late as the 1960s or '70s, but circumstances since then allow for a more radical return of hunters to society. Acton Institute is closely akin to the Von Mises Institute, the proponents of Austrian (~classical market) economics.

I think the fundamental flaws are written into the economic system by the acceptance of a mercantile economy. This includes the banking and financial industries that produce nothing of their own (and with ‘fiat’ currency deal only in others’ debts).

Practically speaking, we can return to a production and marketplace economy by using the latest technology (Amazon, Open Source hardware). This eliminates 2+ layers of merchants on this side of production and potentially countless layers of -]userers/-] -]dealers in debt/-] bankers on the pre-production side.
 
There are many groups named after Thomas More who had people executed for their beliefs.
It is common to name groups after people for what they may have done in certain instances close to our hearts while ignoring things that are less attractive.

I am not so convinced by the claims of these think tanks of political/military and economic unbiasness. That is perfectly fine for an organization to claim not to be bias and all. My problem is when the Catholic Church is placed smack in the middle of it all and the waters get murky. For instance, when it comes to the definition of peace and justice their definition should not be presented as that of the Church. Yes, they have priests affiliates and distinguished Catholic laity but, it does not mean that they represent Catholic views necessarily when the waters clear and all can be seen. The claim of ecumenism makes the line vague.

I find it interesting that Frank Hanna is a member of the Board of Acton. He gave a papyrus to the Vatican, but, there has been a bit too much propaganda about it. Somehow, I think he maintained some type of ownership. That’s too bad. It would have been more noble to have just given it with no strings attached.

Agree. The World Bank et at needs to be kept in serious check too. Btw, Amazon makes a bit too much from the sellers in my opinion.
