Anne Murray! Yes, I had forgotten all about Ms. Murray, whose “You Needed Me” was a huge part of my childhood. I remember sitting all the time in the Mexican restaurant with my parents and sister, punching up tunes on the jukebox. How my parents put up with all the noise, I dunno. To Ms. Murray I would have definitely said “YES!” when she asked me “Can I Have This Dance?”

It’s interesting to see how many people are genuinely moved by John Denver’s songs about national or international events, anti-war, tribute to Challenger, etc. I myself always find it somewhat offputting when an artist who previously sang about more personal topics goes in that direction of releasing many big social message songs (Springsteen is another one who went that way) but I guess there is an audience for it, although the audience is not me.

As for Anne Murray, I loved many of her songs going back to “Snowbird”, and does anybody remember that silly Western TV special she did with the band Chicago? I think she played the villain. It was so hokey and cute, with Terry Kath getting tied to railroad tracks Perils-of-Pauline style. I saw it as a youngun and recently found it again on Youtube.

This is my favorite Anne Murray song. I’d like to dedicate it to the soon-to-be-history CAF World News Forum.

That Reagan speech was obviously written for the emotions of the masses. Astronauts aren’t exactly known for being angels or something. The speech made it sound like they were all up there “for the benefit of mankind”. But whatever. I find that particular part of the speech to be one of the most sappy in history, even for a national tragedy.

I guess I should comment on John Denver. My wife likes him.

We have an elementary school just down the road built soon after the Challenger disaster named Christie McCullough Elementary in honor of the teacher/astronaut. I’m sure there are probably others named after her, too, but I was so pleased when they announced the name of the school.

I can’t pick a favorite, but this song has always been one I loved. I think it’s words are kind of apropos for a new forum. 🙂

I liked his song Calypso, too, his tribute to Jacques Cousteau, maybe more so than others since I’ve always lived near the ocean and my dad loved boating.
