John Dominic Crossan is very visible and actively presenting non traditional Christian belief. He is regularly a part of any Discovery Channel, The Learning Channel and PBS programs related to Christianity and Holy Scriptures. In fact, if you write down the names of the various ‘scholars’ presented on these programs, the majority appear to be members of the ‘Jesus Seminar.’ I find this pretty sad in that the beliefs and views of the Jesus Seminar are given great prominance over all of the other faith traditions, especially what would be considered mainline Christian belief. The Church and the faith we hold is usually treated with disdain or misrepresented. I sometimes want to scream at my TV!

My priest says he feels sorry for those whose only exposure to the Christian message is through programs like this. He says that you get a very distorted view of history and scripture from these programs.

Crossan has many ‘Jesus Seminar’ associates. Consider John Shelby Spong, an Episcopal Bishop who wrote such works as 'Born of a Woman: A Bishop Rethinks the Birth of Jesus.’ If memory serves me well, in this book Mary is the victim of rape, probably by a roman soldier. Another book by Spong is ‘Resurrection Myth or Reality: A Bishop’s Search of the Origins of Chritianity’, read “mass hysteria” and the greatest hoax of all time. Or how about another book ‘Living in Sin? A Bishop Rethinks Human Sexuality’.

I just want to know when he is going to write a book called Belief in God: A Bishop Rethinks My Calling as a Christian or My New Career as a Used Car Saleman.

Another associate is Robert Funk (the founder of the Jesus Seminar). He wrote ‘The Five Gospels: the Search for the Authentic Words of Jesus.’ I do think he found many.

The Jesus Seminar folks may have some good ideas, be nice poeple and very knowledgeable about Scripture and Chritianity. However, they say the Devil quotes scripture with the best of them and recognizes God as well. I am weary of this group. As posted earlier most of their scholarship is not in scholarly publications but for the mass media. They also began their group with highly publicized debates and public appearances like the voting with colored balls on the ‘real words of Jesus.’ I always listen carefully and with a grain of salt when I see or hear any of them or their work.

Awaiting the coming of our Lord this Advent Season - God Blees

It’s substandard scholarship and shoddy research – they are popular because they play to the anti-religion factor, “debunking” the Bible.

And as I said, the Oxford Papyri with datable fragments of the Gospel of Matther knocks the pins out from under their major theses.
