JGC is correct. From the mouths of some Eastern Catholic friends, the book presents Catholicism almost as if it was a purely Western phenomenon.

God bless,

Fr. John Hardon Is A#1:thumbsup:

His catechism is excellent. He has a long list of credentials and accomplishments. He was also spiritual director for Mother Teresa.
There is a tribute to him on Dave Armstrong’s web site. I have that and therealpresence.org on my favorites.

Church Militant:
I’ve got both that & his Catholic dictionary. Orthodox is putting it mildly and I consider them literary treasures. They were part of the Intermirifica catechetics course and sadly that is no longer available. Fr. Hardon was a credit to the Society of Jesus

Pax Vobiscum. 🙂
YUP!!!

I believe this great Jesuit was friends with another GREAT JESUIT: the late Father Malachi Martin, S.J… They just don’t make them like they used to.

Actually, the catechetics courses through Inter Mirifica are still available through Eternal Life at lifeeternal.org/. The Modern Catholic Dictionary is part of the basic course and the Catholic Catechism the Advanced Course. Both are worth checking into.

Yes it is a bit olde worldy, not a critisism, my copy is well thumbed but worth bearing in mind when you read it.

Its very Latin centered as well, numerous mentions of Roman Catholic Church where it should be Catholic Church.

E.G. CATHOLICISM - ‘The faith rituals and morals of the Roman Catholic Church as a historical reality…’

Apart from that, worth having.
It certainly would seem more necessary in your nation than here in the USA to use the correct term"Roman Catholic Church" even though “catholic” means universal.

Thanks to so many contributors here. This thread has been a wonderful read.

Not with you I’m afraid, the Catholic Church is the Catholic Church, the Roman Church is only one, albeit the largest part and it is the Church of the Pope (bishop of Rome) I refer to myself as a Latin Catholic, the Roman term is historically a term of abuse in these parts (Scotland)

Since the Church of England, the Church of Ireland and possibly the Church of Scotland (I don’t have a personal frame of reference there) frequently refer to themselves as “Catholic” when they are in fact protestant, it would seem highly appropriate to use the term: “Roman Catholic”.
We also have to fight the battle in the USA over the nonexistent “American Catholic Church” as opposed to the “Roman Catholic Church” or at least the “Catholic Church” in America.
