I read in wikipedia and many other sources about the liffe of John Hus, I am fairly confused with what had happened to him because these sources told the readers that the church proclaimed execution of Hus by burning him to stake. It is yet so hard for me to defend those such that the Catholic Church did not practice killings of the heretics but the secular authorities themselves. I hope you can help me.

Pax tecum,
John Hus was executed by King Sigismund not by the Catholic Church. In that time period heresy was treason against the state and the punishment was death.

Hi-

I wrote a fairly detailed response about this some months ago, you can read it here. I had a few comments from people who found it helpful, hope you will, too.

Great post. We also need to remember that Thomas More was put to death by the Protestant state . Blaming Anglicans for his death is as wrong as blaming Catholics for the death of John Hus.

**The Church simply handed over, “relaxed”, being the precise term, those it had sentenced to death, to the “secular arm”. The Church authorities most certainly played a part - heresy was not of itself a secular crime; it was a crime because the theologians & canon lawyers said it was; only because of them was there any heretic for the secular arm to burn alive. It was a Pope, Innocent IV, who made torture part of the procedure against heretics, in 1252 - not the secular arm. **

**The reason for the division of labour was a legal one: Church law did not allow Churchmen to shed blood. So someone else had to - that way, the Church could execute its heretics, without violating canon law. THe same thibking is the reason why some bishops used maces in battle, like Odo Bishop of Bayeux in 1066 at the battle of Hastings: maces broke bones, but were considered not to shed blood. **

**Symbolism was also important to the mediaevals: bishops & other churchmen were forbidden to shed blood because they were clerics. So they had to find ways of getting rid of heretics, without incurring blood-guilt in the process. Hence torture, death by fire, & the use of some weapons rather than others. **
