Today, United States Reformed minister and radio preacher John MacArthur has as his featured homepage article: “Is Roman Catholicism Biblical?”

In his argument that the Catholic Church is not Biblical, he cites as the most significant reason: “its denial of the doctrine of sola Scriptura”

Now that is some world class irony.

a question for Rev. MacArthur: is the doctrine of sola scriptura biblical?

I do find this laughable. He really is a smart man, I can’t believe he would say this!
To put it simply, because the Roman Catholic Church has refused to submit itself to the authority of God’s Word and to (embrace the gospel of justification)** taught in Scripture,** it has set itself apart from the true body of Christ. It is a false and deceptive form of Christianity.
What about your denying the True Presence of the Body and Blood of Jesus in John 6? Seems that you are “not submitting to the Authority of God’s Word…taught in Scripture…and setting yourself apart from the TRUE BODY OF CHRIST.”

At least he puts Catholicism under the umbrella of “Christianity” – even if he calls it “false and deceptive.” When Macarthur is good, he is very good. But he’s off the wall when it comes to Catholicism.

the doctrine of sola Scriptura means that “what is asserted without the Scriptures or proven revelation may be held as an opinion, but need not be believed.” Roman Catholicism flatly rejects this principle, adding a host of traditions and Church teachings
Like the doctrine of the TRINITY or the WHOLE NEW TESTAMENT!

I’ll let other people have at this one. This is a great article for a baby apologist to respond to. It’s just too easy. 😛

if you read the end of the article posted, he refers to the Church’s doctrines as “evil.” There is also an add for one of his lectures on Catholics “worshipping” Mary.

he seems like a very ignorant man to me.

Sigh. I’m almost starting to enjoy the smarmy world of anti-Catholic rhetoric. I’m starting a collection.

He does? From what I’ve heard, he calls them a front for Satan.
Read and listen to this dandy of a talk. And they certainly should not be dealt with as fellow Christians.
And one of the resources on his page is about the “Heresy of Catholicism.”

Here’s the part that really bugs me. If it’s in the Bible, it’s Catholic. That’s a fact. The Catholic Church will NEVER teach contrary to Scripture. I can stake my life on that.

Don’t tell people that Catholics don’t believe something that is in Scripture. That is totally false. The Catholic Church is Who gave you the Bible.

Holy COW! Thanks.
You were on point that when he’s right he’s pretty good, but when he’s off, he goes off the deep end in some sort of split-personality that hardly seems like the same person.

He is a big proponent of the primacy of Peter, for instance. LINK.

His psychology is somewhat of a spectacle to me. The seeds for him to see the truth are there. He just rams into an intellectual wall when it comes to the Catholic Church. With some prayer, we can convert him. 😃

Christ gave St. Peter the keys to the kingdom and the power to bind and loose. That’s in the Bible. Who gave the good Rev. the authority to interpret holy scripture?

We can only conclude that it is he who rejects the teachings in the Bible.

I sent the GTY people an email correcting his error on the Catholic teaching on justification, complete with easy to reference Catechism paragraphs. Don’t know if it would do any good…but he should have no excuse properly representing the teaching of a supposedly Satanic organization.

Any system that mingles works with grace, then, is “a different gospel” (Gal. 1:6), a distorted message
You mean like this one:
Faith without works is dead.
James 2:26

Another Protestant preacher who likes to bash Catholics. The list is endless but doesn’t bother me since I am secure in my faith. At one time it would have not anymore.
