I’ve yet to see you make any refutations of protestantism, let alone fresh refutations. 🤷
Go have another coffee, wake up, and read #387 and #389. And before you embarrass yourself again, you might want to read the complete Westminster Confession of Faith written by your spiritual Fathers. The Westminster Confession of Faith, by the way, is what may be termed as Protestant oral tradition in written form, you know, extra-biblical! Being oral tradition in written form, Howie, means that it is not found in the Bible. Do you subscribe to the Westminster Confession of Faith? Or are to free to reject it?

Answers please!

.

In a nutshell, SS states that the scriptures are the sole rule of faith and morals.

Those who adhere to SS believe many things that are not stated in the Bible.
That is so silly and you just don’t get it. You say “sole”. That means only. That means nothing else rules.

Well, my protesting friend… get your bible out put in on your lap or endtable… and wait patiently for it to speak to you. If you open and read… you are self interpreting. If you listen to your faith community leader… you are accepting an outside authority.

No wonder the most common phrase among our Protestant separated brethren is"

“The Bible says…”

You’re doing two things, Tomster, your putting on display your ignorance of SS, and, you’re blowing hard.

In that, you’re not special. I’ve yet to meet a Roman Catholic who can’t do either of those two things.

There’s ample writings explaining SS, if you would but read them.

Should you like a list of writings on the subject, let me know, and I’ll provide you with links. 🙂

That’s not what sola scriptura states, my ignorant of sola scriptura friend.

Those who adhere to SS believe many things that are not stated in the Bible.
If you cannot see the contradictions that are loaded in the above statements . . . .

In all charity my Bible believing friend, and I sincerely mean this without any malice, somewhere inside your head there is an ON/OFF switch. Please find it and put it in the “ON” position.:newidea:

Answer the questions from post # 398 and quit deflecting.

I wonder if he can see the light now? Your few sentences were as succinct on this topic as I have ever heard. You can get any “simpler” than that. Thank you.

One of my sons uses that phrase all the time.

Occasionally I reply…

"Well, most of the Truths given the Church through the Apostles were, over time written down. And I guess one can buy an “audio book” of the Bible - or most of it anyway. Then it would be a matter of the rendition of the Scriptures as read by…

But I accept that the authoritative “mouth” of Scripture comes from God’s plan…and that would be the same Church and its teachings which gave us the canon of Scripture in the first place."

Is it acceptable in this forum to disagree? You make statements extremely authoritatively. I believe you are wrong. Umm so, is it then a debate to try and convince someone against their will? During the Inquisition the Roman church killed millions of people under the conviction that contrary beliefs of heresay justify such inhuman action.

That statement about the Church killing millions of people during the “inquisition” is absolutely and patently absurd. Cite one…just one, non lunatic, credible historian to back that up. You have simply heard this rubbish at some point in your life and you repeat it as if it is true, probably believing it yourself. Your ignorance is showing sir…and not just historically.
Carnegie; “those persuaded against their will are of the same persuasion still” I am not here to “debate” or try and convince you against their will. You are well aware I’m sure that their are those today that deny the Holocaust? THAT was within the last 100 years! Why would it not surprise me that you’d deny the historical facts of what began over 800 years ago and lasted 600 years? You call me ignorant, what are your personal credentials? “Let us pray that each one of us, looking to the Lord Jesus, meek and humble of heart, will recognize that even men of the church, in the name of faith and morals, have sometimes used methods not in keeping with the Gospel in the solemn duty of defending the truth.” – Joseph Cardinal Ratzinger, Jubilee Request for Forgiveness, March 12, 2000 What was he confessing to? I do not desire to come here as a former Catholic to argue, I try to present my side honestly without antagonism, why is it that it seems from a non-catholic perception that their is no, “come let us reason together”? Isaiah 1:18. I trust most people want to know the truth, is that a matter of discussing history that you tell me my sources are “lunatic” or not “credible”? To quote a Seminary doctorate Jerry Kaifetz concerning the pope’s so called acknowledgment of the Inquisition, "The pope has not confessed the bloody and horrible 600-years inquisition against humble Bible-believers, which was instigated by Pope Innocent III (1198-1213). Some of the devices and inventions used to torture the “heresy” out of those rejecting the Catholic Church’s authority included “The Iron Maiden,” “Hanging Cages,” “The Judas Cradle,” “Skinning the Cat,” “The Head Crusher,” “The Heretic’s Fork,” “The Barrel Pillory,” “The Rack,” “The Knee Splitter,” “The Breast Ripper,” and other devices too numerous to mention or too heinous to describe in any detail. The inquisitor was commissioned directly by the pope and acted directly on his behalf. The trials were held in secret and the inquisitor acted as judge, jury and prosecutor. The accused was never represented. The Inquisition resulted in the torture and murder of ***millions of Christians whose only crime was a rejection of Catholic heresy ***and a commitment to follow the Bible as their sole authority for faith and practice. John Paul II has not confessed the Inquisition; he has failed to label his fellow popes the murderers they were.”
Code:
Kaifetz, writing on the cusp of the New Millenium, neatly summarizes the falsehoods, exaggerations and myths of the inquisition established in the religious wars of the 16th Century. While he approaches the inquisition from the perspective of a more traditional form of religious anti-Catholicism, the image he presents would be shared by many today, including some Catholics.
I have seen so many posts here attempting to imply that prior to the Reformation the Catholic church was the only church in existence. The truth is their have always been a church, one not in agreement with the Catholic church which basically began it’s evolution with the legalizing of the Christianity by Constantine around the fourth century. The Roman persecution would end and with a trump of an Emperor Christianity became in vogue. Encyclopedia of Catholic History, by Matthew Bunson (Our Sunday Visitor, 1995) p. 43 says, “The two heresies of the 12th and early 13th centuries that gave birth to the medieval inquisition were that of the Cathars (or Albigensians) and the Waldensians. The Cathars essentially held that the “evil god” of the Old Testament created the material world and saw the Church as the instrument of that material world. The Waldensians preached against wealth, clericalism and rejected the sacramental nature of the Church. Both these movements coalesced to a certain degree, and would become somewhat popular in Southern France, Northern Italy and parts of Germany.”

The Catholic Church is not “Roman”, Howie. This is an insulting term to use. No, the identity of the Church founded by Christ is not an “opinion”. It is infallible because it is built by God, and He preserves her from error. She cannot err because she has Christ as her Head, and her Soul is the Holy Spirit. It is these Divine elements that prevent the Church from error.
It is called The Roman Catholic Church, by tradition, all over the world; and it is an insult to people’s intelligence when you try to escape this fact.

Christ has only protected His Word from error; His doctrine therein from error; but not His people. They are always free to choose or not to choose the Word of truth, or a lie. Another part of history you conveniently leave out. Churches can be and are wrong about things from time to time; and this is why we are admonished to “grow in grace.”

Once again, there were not “millions” of people in Europe at that time, let alone millions of Christians.

Clearly, from the names of the groups mentioned, they were founded by a man or group of men, and were not founded by Christ. The Catholic Church was the only Church in existence founded by Christ Jesus. The Catholic Church did not begin with the legalization of Christianity by Constantine, it began with Jesus Christ who appointed Peter, the Apostle, to tend and feed His sheep while He was physically absent from the Earth. You are right, there have always been groups of people who have separated themselves from the Apostles’ Teachings, but they are not the One, Holy, Catholic and Apostolic Church founded by Christ Himself.

It is called The Roman Catholic Church, by tradition, all over the world; and it is an insult to people’s intelligence when you try to escape this fact.
It is an insult to guanophore, a Byzantine Catholic, to refer to him as a Roman Catholic. It is called the Catholic Church all over the world. Only those in ignorance of the Eastern Rites use “Roman” Catholic.
So His promise to send the Holy Spirit to lead His Apostles “into all truth” was not kept? How very sad.

I am honestly baffled that Ronald thinks his Protestant ideas have existed since the earliest centuries of the Church. We have knowledge of hundreds of heresies from Gnosticism to Arianism. Where is the heresy of Protestantism in the early Church? The earliest remnant you can find is the Inquisition in the thirteenth century! And even that does not hold Protestant ideas, merely things which seem somewhat similar to Protestant ideas. That can hardly be said to be the faith of the Apostles.

newadvent.org/fathers/

Read. See if there is any Protestant ideas in these works. See if there are Protestant ideas even in the Apocrypha listed below! If your “church” was repressed for 1500 years before it finally came out to shine brightly, show us it existed at all! We have record of other heresies; i don’t believe them, but I believe they existed! Protestantism didn’t exist until Martin Luther fabricated it. That’s history; deal with history.

And it is the Catholic Church that is called the Church founded by Jesus Christ, that is reported in every history book and in every dictionary etc… by tradition… all over the world.

Yep, “That’s history; deal with it.” History is not at the top of a Protestants’ priority list. In fact, most run from it like the plague. I guess it’s because the historical accounts of 2,000 years of Christian history are not in the Bible, therefore, history is not to be trusted. It’s the Bible alone thing, you know, sola scriptura. :hey_bud:

C’mon, MrS. You can’t possibly know that unless you’ve read every history book, dictionary, etc., ever written.

Webster’s (those at my disposal) don’t even have a listing for “Catholic Church,” and in its entry for the Roman Catholic Church, it makes no mention of it having been the “Church founded by Jesus Christ,” in fact, in makes no specific mention of Christ at all, but only “Christian.”

Neither does The International Bible Encyclopedia have any entry for “Catholic Church,” nor can I find an entry for that in any Greek lexicon at my disposal.

It’s also an insult to people’s intelligence when you make outlandish and unsupportable statements such as those you’ve made above, MrS. 🤷
