No need because, you see, in the Apostles the foundation of the church was laid and Christ is building His church upon that foundation to this very day.
That is illogical. How can you build on top without rightful succession? It makes no sense to say the body of Christ builds upon itself when everyone is disparagingly building on top of random rocks. Your must build on top of Peter’s rock, which sits on top of the cornerstone the master builder has laid out.
But this was unprecedented since it was Jesus Himself who chose them, they didn’t choose amongst themselves (Jn. 15:16)
“And they appointed two, Joseph, called Barsabas, who was surnamed Justus, and Matthias. 24 And praying, they said: Thou, Lord, who knowest the heart of all men, show whether of these two thou hast chosen, 25 To take the place of this ministry and apostleship, from which Judas hath by transgression fallen, that he might go to his own place. 26 And they gave them lot, and the lot fell upon Matthias, and he was numbered with the eleven apostles.” Acts 1
It is clear St. Matthias was appointed by the apostles with the help of the holy spirit. Exactly the way apostolic succession is done today.

I have linked the Scripture verses in my post to Biblegateway.com for easy reading.

Apostolic Succession was done by “lot” before Pentecost. Now, however, except for choosing the Pope which is done by ballot,** apostolic succession is done through “teaching” and the “laying on of hands”** as demonstrated in 1 Timothy 3, 1 Timothy 5:21-22, 2 Timothy 2:1-3. The Holy Spirit guided them into all truth at Pentecost and still guides the Church today. (John 16:13)

The hierarchy of Jesus’ Church (apostles, bishops, priests) have the authority to lead Christ’s Church and this includes the interpretation of Scripture as shown in Luke 10:16 "He who hears you hears Me, he who rejects you rejects Me, and he who rejects Me rejects Him who sent Me.” (Hebrews 13:7) This is divine decree and cannot be changed by anyone. Lay members of Christ’s Church do not have this authority to interpret Scripture. (2 Peter 1:20, 2 Peter 3:15-17) Dissident priests and bishops who do not agree with the teachings of the pope and magisterium also do not have the authority to interpret Scripture since they have not stayed true to the Church’s teachings and are instead preaching a different gospel. (2 Peter 2:1-3, Galatians 1:6-8)

My brother, the problem is you are talking to people who want to argue about ‘always saved’ but are not qualified to, because they don’t hold to nor understand ‘once saved’! You’re talking to dead men walking.
I understand very well that Eternal Security or OSAS is a false doctrine.

Paul told the Galatians that those who believed that they could be saved by circumcision had fallen from grace and had severed themselves from Christ.

“Fallen from grace” means that they no longer have grace even though to be able to “fall from grace,” a person has to have had “grace” in the first place. A person has to be “grafted” to Christ before he can ever be “severed” from Christ. These persons have cut themselves off (severed themselves) from Christ the Vine and so they are no longer saved.

Galatians 5:4 “You are severed from Christ, you who would be justified by the law; you have fallen away from grace.”

These once-saved persons are no longer saved/justified and they have to repent and confess if they desire to become justified again and have the “hope” of eternal life.

This is explained in greater detail here:
forums.catholic-questions.org/showpost.php?p=5256025&postcount=888

We separate ourselves from God through sin. However, He loves us and is always waiting patiently for us to repent and return to Him and we can do so until the time of our deaths.

In context:
Romans 8:1, 38-39 “There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus, who do not walk according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit… 38 For I am persuaded that neither death nor life, nor angels nor principalities nor powers, nor things present nor things to come, 39 nor height nor depth, nor any other created thing, shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.”

If we are abiding in Christ Jesus (obeying His commandments and doing His Father’s will) then nothing shall be able to separate us from the love of God. Salvation is conditional. If we do not obey Him, then we are no longer “in Christ Jesus” or “abiding in Him” and we will not inherit eternal life. (2 Peter 2:15, Romans 11:22) If we are truly “in Christ Jesus” then we cannot be separated from the love of God which is in Jesus Christ our Lord.

I see he wrote this in 1994. Wonder if he still holds these views ?

He seems a sharp fellow and knows his scriptures. I like to listen to him, but I don’t like what he said here in 1994.
Are you referring to the Whore of Babylon, Pope is antichrist views at the end of his study?

Looks like he still may hold these errant views on Catholic Church. What a shame for a man with such a good mind … to besmirch it by not taking the time to read early church history.

Guanophore … I bet you have researched John Mac’s theology. I’ve only heard him 3-4 times … and was initially impressed by his teaching on book of Matthew.

What’s your global opinion on JM ?

Now this just dawned on me: it means those who can’t read can’t possibly be saved since they have no access to scriptures.
Hmmm, I must be so lucky then because I can read.😃

Woe to those too who lived before the printing press was invented.

Exactly. The key word here is to research it “yourself.” Isn’t that what sola scriptura is all about anyway? Perhaps he needs to listen to another person though (MacArthur?, Swaggart?, Van Impe?) to get some good old time Bible teaching from a self appointed interpreter of Scripture? :rotfl:
Yea John MacArthur is pretty good. You might check out Walter Martin on You Tube.

So much for the Bible Alone theory, ppasa316. Thanks for admitting you need an extra-biblical, fallible human source to help you interpret the Scriptures. NEXT ! . . . . . .

What are you talking about. I use the John MacArthur bible. The words are the same duh. Next! If you can’t make sense get off the forum. You are making the catholic faith look bad. I know not all catholics are like you but cmon. If you need help understanding the scriptures I will be more than willing to help you.

If I wanted to play that game I could just as easily say John MacAuthur is Peter’s “successor.” You have no recourse for rebuttal since Peter, nor any of the Apostles, ever spoke of appointing “successors” or ever named any.
Apostolic succession is not a game, moon. I agree with you, though, you could “just as easily say” that the sky is fuschia. However, your assertions don’t create reality. Reality is that the Apostles appointed successors. The NT and the history of the Church attests to this fact.
And the theopneustos Scriptures recognize only the original; and it says that the church is presently being built upon them.
Apparently you are erroneously asserting that the successors of the Apostles were also Apostles. So far as we know, this is only true in one case, when the office of Judas was succeeded by Matthias. All the other successors did not meet the requirements of Apostleship, and they were called Bishops.

How anyone can read the NT and not see that Paul appointed Timothy and Titus to succeed him is a wonder to me.
IOW, this whole idea of “Apostolic succession” being unbiblical and without any Apostolic authority behind it, is completely subjective — Hey, on second thought, I would appoint myself. 😃
Clearly, you already HAVE appointed yourself, having disregarded the testimony of the Church and the Scripture.
That’s why historically you had the Bishop in the west (the Latin church) claiming absolute authority, and the Bishop in the east (the Greek church) denying it, and claiming it for himself.
No, the reason that these events occurred is a result of human fraility, ego, hubris, arrogance, and other works of the flesh. None of these human failings, however, negate the office of Bishop as established by Christ, any more than Peter and Paul’s failings negate their position as Apostles.

You must discount what God has put in place so that you will not suffer a guilty conscience by denying it. Any Christian of any fervency, such as yourself, would by nature experience pricking of the conscience if one accepted the historical evidence of Apostolic Succession.

The Catholic Church is not just “Roman;” it is Roman Catholic, and well beyond the borders of North America.
No, P101, the Catholic Church is not “Roman”. Most especially beyong the borders of North America. Western Europe is largely within the Latin Rite, but Eastern Europe, Arabia, the Orient, Egypt, Africa, etc. are definitely not predominantly Latin.
it is not a misrepresentation to call it that; especially when we see it with our own eyes that this is what your church does.
It is a misrepresentation to refer to the Catholic Church as “Roman”. However, I will conceed that it is likely you have no experience with the non-Latin parts of the Catholic Church, and are only speaking out of your ignorance.

I am not sure what you mean by “what your church does”, but the non-Latin Rites do things quite differently. I will also state that there are sinners everywhere, and wrongdoing of people claiming to be members of Christ should not be ascribed to Christ, any more than the betrayal of Judas should be blamed upon our Lord.
The Pontiff doesn’t have to be “Roman” for your Church to be called Roman Catholic.
You are right. People such as yourself can use this slur and insult in any venue, for any reason, and certainly have.
Code:
He rules from Rome, and your denomination is rightly called, worldwide, the Roman Catholic Church, both by your own brethren and the rest of the world, with some isolated exceptions.
Actually, P101, it is you that are isolated. Your experience of the Catholic Church is apparently limited to the Latin Rite. I suggest you find a Byzantine church near you. Attend, and convince them after the Divine Liturgy that they are “Roman”. 😃

I do agree, though, there are a great many ignorant “Roman” Catholics that don’t understand that there are 22 other non-Latin Rites also in communion with the bishop of Rome.
Code:
You are deliberately insulting and slanderous to have the nerve to characterize people like this, you misrepresent your own church as well as Protestants.
It is not my intention to be insulting, but what I am saying is true, and not slander. Furthermore, I do accurately represent the Church teaching in this matter. Jesus appointed Peter to “feed” His sheep. This Petrine ministry has been passed in an unbroken succession from his time until today. Each Pope is charged with the responsibility to feed and care for the flock of God on earth. The Pope prays for all Christians daily, and carries out his ministry whether it is recognized by you, or not. You, and all other Christians, including those who call themseves Catholic, and behave like Protestants, can be described as rebbellious subjects of the Successor of Peter. Your refusal to accept his governance over you does not invalidate what he was given by God.
Is there some reason you cannot give logical explanations, and solid Bible doctrine instead of this mind-bend?
You are replying to a post addressed to moondweller. Should I assume that you also reject the Apostolic Succession?

I must admit I am curious how you will dispense with the biblical and historical evidence.

My brother, the problem is you are talking to people who want to argue about ‘always saved’ but are not qualified to, because they don’t hold to nor understand ‘once saved’!
How does one become “qualified” to discuss this matter? Does one have to become OSAS in order to have a dialogue about it’s meaning? What comes to mind is a wonderful scene in Star Trek The Voyage Home, where Spock tells McCoy that there is no common frame of reference to discuss his experience, since McCoy had not died, and risen from the dead. “You mean I have to die in order to discuss death with you?”
You’re talking to dead men walking.
With all due respect, this seems like a rather prejudicial and insulting remark. Do you consider all Catholics “dead men walking”, or do you just claim to know the content of our hearts by reading our posts?

I asked essentially the same question and I’ve not gotten an answer.

Enjoy your darkness while you can. Say hi to the JW’s for us.
TQ, CAF is a forum where people can come for Catholic answers. The attitude of your posts indicates that you are not here for that purpose.

Your comments seem to indicate that you believe you have the answers that you need, and the Catholic perspective is damnable.
You’ve already demonstrated that I would merely be casting pearls before the proverbial swine
Did you just come here to hurl insults, then?
Yeh, that was my bad. I meant to refer to Egypt’s religion. Doesn’t change a single fact about the RCC. Stuff you’ve heard many times and hardened your heart toward.
TQ, I gather from your posts that you are in posession of relatively few “facts about the RCC”, one of the primary being that the CAtholic Church is not “Roman”.

Scripture merely records what Peter did by suggesting that they draw straws to select another (an O.T. custom). But this was unprecedented since it was Jesus Himself who chose them, they didn’t choose amongst themselves (Jn. 15:16).
You can’t have it both ways, moon. Either it is an OT custom, or it is an unprecedented action. Which is it? Was Peter using an OT custom, or did he invent something new?
Code:
The *theopneustos* Scriptures do not record that Jesus appeared to Peter giving Him instruction to do what he did. The only instruction they had from Christ was not to leave Jerusalem and to wait for the coming of the Holy Spirit whom the Father had promised (Acts 1:4). Their choosing of Matthias was done even before the coming of the Holy Spirit who was to be sent to guide them.
Which is why they cast lots. This was a method used to discern the will of God. You seem to be asserting that what Peter did was contrary to God’s intention. We are in agreement that scripture does not record everything, and the fact that scripture does not record how God led Peter to do this does not mean Peter was walking outside of God’s intention. Surely, God had the power to redirect Peter when it was necessary.
Code:
Secondly, Judas was not an Apostle sent by Christ to take the good news of Himself to the world to be believed for the forgiveness of sins and the gift of eternal life. Judas never saw the resurrected Christ (Acts 1:8), nor did he receive the 40 day post resurrection instruction by Christ to those He prepared to take His gospel to the world. Hence, he was *never* a true Apostle.
Yes, Jesus chose many to be Apostles. He chose Judas also. He send Judas to preach, teach, and heal. He chose Matthias, through the casting of the lot.
Code:
Thirdly, it's my understanding that not even RC scholars appeal to the episode with Matthias to substantiate its claims for Apostolic "*succession*" since the official teaching of your church is that its Bishops are not Apostles but, it is said, only their threefold power of teaching, sanctifying, and ruling is what is succeeded.
Both things are true. IN the account of Matthias, we see clearly that the place that Judas left was considered an “office” and that when it was vacated, another should take it. However, you are correct that those who were appointed later to succeed the Apostles did not meet the criteria to be Apostles as Paul and Matthias did.
Code:
IOW, it's taught that your Bishops have the power but not the office.
It is taught that they have both. Theirs is the office of bishop (shepherd, overseer, episkopos).
Code:
But, c'mon, without the office how can there be, in reality, a "*successor*?" A "*successor*" replaces both the person and the position.
Exactly. 👍
Code:
And what might his name be? Chapter? Verse? How is it Peter himself didn't name his "*successor*" in his own Epistles?
I see that the Catholic Church has preserved this little element of history unknown to some of our separated brethren. When Paul wrote to Rome, Peter had not yet been martryd, and did not need a successor.
Code:
How is it the Apostles never used the word "successors" or even hinted to the idea that there would be such a thing. In the churches they appointed elders, not "*successors*."
It is quite clear in the letters to Timothy and Titus that the Apostle expected these bishops to act in his authority in his absence, and to complete the duties of their office.
In Acts 2:43 it’s said that the Apostles performed wondrous signs to confirm both their ministry and message. And in 2 Cor. 2:12 Paul says to the Corinthians in his own defense:2 Cor 12:12 "The signs of a true apostle were performed among you with all perseverance, by signs and wonders and miracles."Yet after the death of the Apostles those signs and wonders all but ceased.
I guess you must believe this fable in order to discount the Apostolic Succession. I think , though, if you are willing to undertake an honest study of the lives of the saints you wil see that this is untrue. The signs and wonders have not ceased.
Code:
We have no record of such powers being passed on to so-called "*successors*."
I think this is very true in most cases. Most Modern American Evangelicals don’t even know there are such things as “Early Church FAthers” and have never read their writings. Then there are people such as yourself, who are aware, yet continue to staunchly claim “we have no record”. It seems necessary for you to disregard the historical evidence so that you can justify your disobedience to those that Jesus appointed to shepherd the Church.
Code:
We have the Apostle's complete message, their testimonies and their teachings preserved for us in *theopneustos* Scriptures.
Have you never considered that, if this were true, the Scriptures would say this about themselves? On the contrary, they say the opposite! However, the embracing of this doctrine is necesary to justify rebellion against His appointed shepherds.
Code:
No new revelation is ever needed - the foundation of the church was laid ONCE and Christ is building upon it.
This is indeed Catholic. Our understanding of the revelation is needed, but the revelation was complete at the death of the last Apostle.

I am not as “ignorant” of Catholic history as you would like people to think. I know that The Catholic Church is a communion of the Western Rite (Latin Rite) and 22 autonomous Eastern Catholic Churches (called particular churches), comprising 2,795 dioceses as of 2008. BUT, it wasn’t even until the First Vatican Council in 1870 that leaders began to struggle to contain and eliminate use of the phrase “Roman Catholic.”

If the Pope’s home diocese, is indeed the Diocese of Rome, then it can be seen why, historically, people have called all the Rites, (denominations) collectively, “The Roman Catholic Church.” Knowing that today the officially called Catholic Church does not, since Vatican I, like to use the term Roman Catholic, cannot take away how the the Diocese of Rome is central to the Catholic Church, and that technically, it is not really wrong to refer to it as “Roman Catholic.”

Officially; your Church is now called The Catholic Church; but this is really just reflecting your Church’s attempts to escape the fact that you also have denominations, within the ranks. Your leadership wants to use the term Catholic Church to distance itself from the originally Anglican contention that the “church of the creed” was supposed to consist of three major “branches;” Anglican, Orthodox, and “Roman Catholic.”

The term “Roman Catholic” is indeed mostly confined to the english language; for it was by the english speaking Bishops at Vatican I that the initial attempt to distance from “Roman Catholic” was made. But it was specifically to avoid the Anglican idea that your leadership decided to try stopping the use of the term “Roman Catholic.”

Another example of changing truth in Roman Catholic theology.
You, and all other Christians, including those who call themseves Catholic, and behave like Protestants, can be described as rebbellious subjects of the Successor of Peter. Your refusal to accept his governance over you does not invalidate what he was given by God.
Your persistent claims of “authority” and wanton criticism of Protestants do not have anything to do with actual authority; it does not confer authority on your Church in any way. It only shows you as parroting the exact same thing as hundreds of cults who all want us to think that only they have the “truth” or “the fullness of truth.”

You can’t have it both ways, moon. Either it is an OT custom, or it is an unprecedented action. Which is it? Was Peter using an OT custom, or did he invent something new?
You do need to think before you post, guanophore. Peter did employ an O.T. custom by casting lots; what was unprecedented was choosing an Apostle among themselves. It’s Christ, as Head of the church, who chose His Apostles; that prerogative is Christ’s alone and was never theirs, and especially by casting lots. Peter still had an Old Covenant mentality; he eventually learned.
You mean you’re in agreement with me that Scripture reveals Peter had no direct instruction from Christ to choose another Apostle. All he was told, along with the others, was to not leave Jerusalem but wait for the Holy Spirit whom the Father had promised would come.
Yes, Jesus chose many to be Apostles. He chose Judas also. He send Judas to preach, teach, and heal. He chose Matthias, through the casting of the lot.
As I pointed out in my previous post, Judas never actually became an Apostle. He never saw the resurrected Christ and never took the message to the world of believing in this resurrected One for the forgiveness of sins (Acts 10:43; 13:38) and the FREE GIFT of eternal life through faith in Him (Rom. 6:23). Judas hoped and initially believed that Jesus was the triumphant Jewish Messiah, revealed by the ancient prophets, who would liberate Judea from Rome, but he knew nothing of Jesus being the suffering Servant: The Savior of the world. Judas had no such saving faith.
Both things are true. IN the account of Matthias, we see clearly that the place that Judas left was considered an “office” and that when it was vacated, another should take it. However, you are correct that those who were appointed later to succeed the Apostles did not meet the criteria to be Apostles as Paul and Matthias did.
What was appointed in all the churches were elders/overseers (Gr. presbuteros/episkopos). They’re one and the same office (Titus 1:5-7)Titus 1:5 "For this reason I left you in Crete, that you would set in order what remains and appoint elders (presbuteros) in every city as I directed you,"Paul doesn’t instruct to appoint “successors” in every city. No such concept existed then or in Scripture. That concept developed and evolved AFTER the Apostolic age.
It is taught that they have both. Theirs is the office of bishop (shepherd, overseer, episkopos).
No. You yourself stated in an earlier post that your Bishops are not Apostles. And those in authority over you in Rome agree. A "presbuteros/episkopos is not an Apostle. A “successor” is one who inherits some title or office. The appointed “elders/overseers” inherited nothing of the sort. They were to teach, stand firm and exhort others in the doctrines taught to them by the Apostles (2 Thess. 2:15); and it’s upon the foundation of the Apostles that Christ is building His church (Eph. 2:20).
I see that the Catholic Church has preserved this little element of history unknown to some of our separated brethren. When Paul wrote to Rome, Peter had not yet been martryd, and did not need a successor.
Paul wrote to Rome because Peter was not there. If he had been Paul would have had no reason to write to that church. Or are you implying that maybe Peter was incompetent? There are no contemporary historical accounts to prove Peter’s alleged position in the church at Rome. What is said about Peter in relation to that church was asserted AFTER his death. Not surprisingly not even Paul mentions him in the list of those to “greet” at the end of his letter (Rom. ch. 16).
It is quite clear in the letters to Timothy and Titus that the Apostle expected these bishops to act in his authority in his absence, and to complete the duties of their office.
Neither Timothy nor Titus are called “Bishops.” In the Scriptures they’re identified as fellow workers/laborers in Paul’s Apostolic ministry to the churches he planted (1 Cor. 16:10; 2 Cor. 8:23).
I guess you must believe this fable in order to discount the Apostolic Succession. I think , though, if you are willing to undertake an honest study of the lives of the saints you wil see that this is untrue. The signs and wonders have not ceased.
There are many fables attached to your list of so-called “saints.” Can you give me a documented source that lists the wondrous works performed by each of your “popes?” Which ones, like Peter, raised the dead in the presence of others? Which healed men who were lame from birth? If the wondrous works of the Apostles were being performed by your Bishops all the world would be RC. Not necessarily saved, but RC.
I think this is very true in most cases. Most Modern American Evangelicals don’t even know there are such things as “Early Church Fathers” and have never read their writings.
There’s no such things as “ECFs.” There’s early church writers, but just because they wrote extant letters doesn’t make them “fathers” of the church. As if their writings held some inherent authority. However, as you read their writings what stands out significantly is that they quoted Scripture profusely. So what we all should learn from them by example is the absolute authority of Scripture. Even “Sola Scriptura

MacArthur did make some good points re “sola scriptura;” and it is good to see you uplifting this essential Christian principle here. This was an excellent post; I enjoyed reading it.

guanophore will soon have an easy out - the 1000 post mark is fast approaching for this thread.

This was in response to Moondweller:
"In Acts 2:43 it’s said that the Apostles performed wondrous signs to confirm both their ministry and message. And in 2 Cor. 2:12 Paul says to the Corinthians in his own defense:

Perhaps the main reason that we do not hear of as many demons being cast out is because Satan’s power has been restricted or chained for the time period during the “times of the gentiles.” This is what is meant by “Satan bound/chained for a thousand years” while Jesus is reigning at the right hand of His Father in heaven along with His saints and martyrs. (Revelation 20:1-4)

We are nearing the time that Satan will be permitted to use his full power against Christians and Jews during the “time of Antichrist.”

The “thousand years” is not literal. It means a “long” time. (2 Peter 3:8)
