I’m not sure what JPII’s daily prayer to the Holy Spirit was, but what was posted above is just the lyrics to the old hymn Come Holy Ghost, Creator Blest with all the thee’s and thou’s stripped out and various other changes to the wording to conceal the fact that they were ever there. (The hymn is a verse translation of the Latin sequence for Pentecost, Veni Sancte Spiritus.) You can see the lyrics in their more traditional style here.

You are very welcome, Walt. Rest assured that Veni Creator Spiritus is the prayer to the Holy Spirit that Pope John Paul the Great prayed daily. He did so, since one evening when he was young and was anxious about an exam he was going to have (algebra ?) the following day. His father gave him a little card with this prayer and suggested that he ask the Holy Spirit for help. He prayed it every day ever since. I do not know in what language he prayed but this was it. The prayer card his father gave him was probably in Polish. I can say that he loved the latin language. I would not be surprised to learn that he knew this prayer by heart in latin as well as polish

I read a most inspiring book about the Pope and his relationship with the Holy Spirit and this only months before he passed away. When he passed away as of that day I started praying the prayer, but unfortunately was not that disciplined and at some point I stopped. I have thousands of books and am unable to find the little book right now. I think what I have is a translation from another language.

I would not give misinformation. I respect and appreciate the importance of the request.

I see nothing wrong with using the more modern translation. Sometimes, when praying I feel prayers can get too “stuffy” and it can become much more personal to move the translation into a more comfortable language.

I found the little book. It was put together and published by Paulinas which is the spanish of Pauline.

The title is : Novena Biblica al Espiritu Santo Y Trisagio Biblico a La Santisima Trinidad. That is, Biblical Novena to the Holy Spirit and Biblical Trisagion to the Most Holy Trinity. ISBN: 9802074950 distributed by: Paulinas Distribuidora - Caracas, Venezuela.

In the book a speech is quoted that Pope John Paul the Great gave in 1980 to a group of charismatics

" Yo desde pequeno aprendi a resar al Espiritu Santo. Cuando tenia 11 anos me entristecia porque se me dificultaban mucho las matematicas. Mi padre me mostro en un librito el himno “VEN CREADOR ESPIRITU”, y me dijo: “Rezalo y veras que el te ayuda a comprender” , LLevo mas de 40 anos rezando este himno todos los dias, y he sabido lo mucho que ayada el Divino Espiritu." Papa Juan Pablo El Grande.

" I since I was a child I learned to pray to the Holy Spirit. When I was 11 years old I would get sad because I found mathematics difficult. My father showed me in a little book the hymn Come Holy Spirit, and he told me: “Pray it and you will see that he will help you to understand” , for more than 40 years I have prayed this hymn every day, and I have known how the Holy Spirit helps a lot"

I see what Mark Thompson was pointing out in regards to the first post being of a modernized version of the prayer. I did not even notice that when I pasted the prayer. I personally prefer the version with thee, thou. I got use to this when reading the works of Shakespeare. It does not disturb me. I say the Hail Mary and the Our Father with the thee and thou. It’s your preference. Actually, I just read the prayer in spanish and it makes more sense to me in spanish than in English. I think I will pray it in spanish for a while.

Even this one has much better flow:
