I heard a lot of anti-Catholic critics say that Bl. John Paul II once said, “Do NOT go to God for forgiveness, come to ME.” Is this true?

Tell us where you “heard” this one.

Are you visiting a bunch of anti-Catholic websites?

That sure doesn’t sound like anything that Pope John Paul would have said. Who comes up with this stuff that you keep citing?

I think I have heard of this…it is a misquote or misstatement or a statement, a single sentence singled out…taking out the context.

It is most likely from an anti catholic website.

I can’t find that it was part of a TIMES magazine article but apparently the LA Times made the claim.

Los Angeles Times of December 12, 1984

But I cant find the actual article and therefore cant determine whom they are claiming that he said it?

Most likely a twisted version of something he did say. Perhaps he was speaking of Confession and people who dont undertand Catholic doctrine twisted the meaning all together…

I saw it on the cover of an old TIME Magazine.
Are you sure it wasn’t an old Chick tract?

When I researched the quote “Do NOT go to God for forgiveness, come to ME”, I come up with anti-Catholic websites, the LA Times article referred to earlier, and a thread from here at CAF from 2010.

By any chance do you research any of these things before you start threads?

I don’t listen to anything Chick Tract says. That man is crazy and he obviously would say something like that. And yes I do research stuff before starting threads. It’s amazing what you can find.

It might’ve been from LA Times where I found it instead of TIME, it’s been years since I’ve seen it but someone brought it up and it reminded me of it.

OH, I agree, there is some crazy stuff out there. That is why I asked if you were visiting some anti-Catholic websites.

I always look to see who is putting the information out there, and who is running the site to see if it affects their credibility.

One of the reasons I asked if you researched this was because of an almost identical thread that I had found.

Which thread? This is the only one I wrote in terms of what John Paul II “supposedly” said. Most of the sources I get this stuff from are from mostly non-religious sources, mainly secular media. I have seen some stuff on anti-Catholic and radical-Traditionalist sources as well, but for the most part it all comes from secular media.

Click on the link in post #8 (where it says CAF)

It is a thread from 2010
