I know from kindergarten that “My patron saint is St. John the Baptist. St. John the Baptist baptized Jesus…and he was his cousin.” I got to wear a deerskin from my dad and go to each classroom of big kids from 1st-8th grade. 🙂

But what is the connection? John, was like many individuals of the time, proclaiming various and alarming warnings to their fellow Jews. Many small sects were following many ‘prophets’ who were becoming leaders of these groups. The Romans were aware of this and payed little attention. In the beginning of Jesus’ ministry, the Romans payed little attention to Him and His followers against the backdrop of all of these other ‘sects’.

Is there an Old Testiment precurser to John’s call to baptism? Yes, the Flood, and perhaps the Exodus through the parted-waters. Were he and Jesus “working together” on their meeting at the Jordan R. that day? Why did **God the Son ** need to have his sins washed away through baptism? He had no sins.

Tongue-in-cheek advisory: Did John baptize Jesus, “In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.” ?

The Baptism of Jesus by John in the Jordan! One of my favorite feasts!
  1. In the Eastern Rite, we see the Son of God entering and *sanctifying the waters *for our baptism!
  2. We have the declaration of the Trinity in this spectacular scene, from where all baptisms flow. We as Catholics can recall this scene when we are present and participating at a baptism, that the Trinity is present and the Holy Spirit is descending like a dove upon the baptized. Beautiful!
In the Eastern Rite vespers, “the waters were afraid” to see the Son of God descend into them! The readings of the parting of the Red Sea for the people to pass on dry ground is read. We are those people when baptized!

If I had my vespers book handy, I would type out some of the beautiful hymnology for you. It’s a fabulous catechism.
