John..........what do i need to know?

       I'm going to this conference and as part fo the program, there is a bible quiz. The quiz is on the whole chapter of John. Any study tips? and also, are there any points that may be good to remember specifically.

Look for themes in John.

The first 18 lines make up the “Prologue”. Its like an introduction to the themes that John’s Gospel will cover. Think of it as an “overture in an opera”.

Think of the theme of Creation. “In the Beginning…”, Light, Darkness, Life…

7 Days of Creation and then Adam and Eve are married. 7 Days of the New Creation (in John’s Gospel) and we find Jesus and Mary at a wedding.

7 Signs - signs are to make people believe. Water into wine, healing of the official’s son, multiplication of the loaves, etc…

In John’s Gospel, Jesus will fulfill so many of the Old Testament festivals - Passover, Festival of Lights, Chanukah (cleansing of the Temple), etc.

Also, the entire Gospel reads like a court trial. Jesus is constantly asked to provide witnesses to the things He says.

It is the gospel of John and yes, it is a Catholic quiz.

I would suggest reading the gospel of John then get you a commentary like I have one called John stories of word and faith. written by Father Robert Karris
Or one of your choice read it and you then will understand The Gospel even better.

Something I find interesting about John’s Gospel is how much of it is spent covering Our Lord’s final weeks on earth. And especially the coverage of His last conversation/instructions to the apostles at the Last Supper.

There are 21 chapters in John’s gospel. 9 out of the 21 (not quite half, but more than 1/3) of those chapters, cover the short period from the Last Supper thru His resurrection appearances (time wise, less than 40 days).
(Compared to 3 out of 28 chapters for Matthew; 3 out of 16 for Mark; and 3 out of 24 for Luke.)
 
Of all the Gospels, John is the most concerned with Jesus’ divine nature.

Exactly. There is evidence that John’s Gospel was written to combat the gnostics that were arising in the early church.
