I also want to describe how Dark Shadows indirectly influenced my older daughter’s career choice.
While I was watching Dark Shadows, I became interested in theater. A lot of the actors did interviews and talked about their acting and other theatrical backgrounds, and I was hooked.
I was never much of an actress (although I was the lead in our high school Senior play, Arsenic and Old Lace) , but I played the piano, and a good pianist is always useful when it’s time for the school musical!
I did take drama classes in high school and learned enough about theater that I was able to start working with little kids in my churches (Protestant).
During the 1980s, I and the choir director at my church in North Carolina produced a wonderful musical/drama each year. My husband worked with the teenagers (he IS a good actor) and directed them in their musical/dramas.
And we worked with adults. I even wrote an adult Readers’ Theater for Easter one year.
When our daughter was born in 1983, we got her involved in all our amateur theater efforts. She started ballet lessons when she was three, and went to every theater workshop and class we could get her to. By the time she was in 6th grade, she tried out for the local youth theater troupe and was accepted. She did internships with local directors during high school, she was in every school play (usually the lead), and when she was a Senior, I allowed her to direct my church children’s choir as we produced “Pilgrim’s Progress–A Musical Journey for Children’s Choir” (I wrote it, including all the songs).
So naturally, she majored in theater, and worked in theaters all over the city while she was in college, and graduated early and got a job as a production stage manager, and LOVES IT!
