The sky rolling up like a scroll sounds like a nuclear blast.
Immaculate Heart of Mary, conquer, reign and rule in all hearts; and bring the bishops to consecrate Russia to you as requested at Fatima for your promised conversion and as the “only” way to a “period of peace.” AMEN
“Pray the daily Rosary for peace.” --Our Lady of the Rosary at Fatima, Portugal
My two cents.
The rather unique imagery of the sky being rolled up like a scroll - in fact, a good chunk of the passage where John describes the opening of the sixth seal - is one taken from the Old Testament describing the judment upon the nations and upon Edom (Isaiah 34:4).
Draw near, O nations, to hear,
and give attention, O peoples!
Let the earth hear, and all that fills it;
the world, and all that comes from it.
For the Lord is enraged against all the nations,
and furious against all their host;
he has devoted them to destruction, (footnote:
That is, set apart (devoted) as an offering to the Lord (for destruction); also verse 5) has given them over for slaughter.
Their slain shall be cast out,
and the stench of their corpses shall rise;
the mountains shall flow with their blood.
All the host of heaven shall rot away,
and the skies roll up like a scroll.
All their host shall fall,
as leaves fall from the vine,
like leaves falling from the fig tree.
For my sword has drunk its fill in the heavens;
behold, it descends for judgment upon Edom,
upon the people I have devoted to destruction.
The Lord has a sword; it is sated with blood;
it is gorged with fat,
with the blood of lambs and goats,
with the fat of the kidneys of rams.
For the Lord has a sacrifice in Bozrah,
a great slaughter in the land of Edom.
Wild oxen shall fall with them,
and young steers with the mighty bulls.
Their land shall drink its fill of blood,
and their soil shall be gorged with fat.
When he opened the sixth seal, I looked, and behold, there was a great earthquake, and the sun became black as sackcloth, the full moon became like blood, and the stars of the sky fell to the earth as the fig tree sheds its winter fruit when shaken by a gale. The sky vanished like a scroll that is being rolled up, and every mountain and island was removed from its place.
In ancient thought the firmament is compared to or thought to be a sort of canopy (Isaiah 40:22) or tent (Psalm 104:2), something similar to a thin sheet of beaten metal, that stretched over from horizon to horizon and was spread over the whole earth to form the vault of the sky. The firmament served a purpose: it prevented the ‘waters above’ from crashing down upon the earth below and inundate it. There were small holes in it, however, which allowed water to pass through in the form of rain (Genesis 7:11; Psalm 78:23-24). The sun, moon and stars were fixed into this canopy (Genesis 1:14-18). The imagery is thus rather striking when you keep that in mind: the heavenly canopy is described as receding like an unrolled scroll that, should it break in the middle, would roll back quickly on either side.
