It should be noted there has been some debate whether graphic abortion signs should be used in public at Catholic Forums…

Warning Signs will be posted well ahead of the pictures so people can chose to detour and take another route if they do not want to see the pictures.

By Jill Stanek (Jill@illinoisleader.com)

illinoisleader.com/content/img/f1222/SZ200_Jillsign.jpgJill Stanek held the “Baby Malachi” sign in front of Speaker Madigan and Leader Daniels’ offices this springEmmett Till was a 14-year-old black kid from Chicago. In the summer of 1955, Emmett convinced his mom to let him visit relatives in Mississippi.

Although Mrs. Till put Emmett on the train with a warning that things were different for blacks in the South, he had no idea just how different things were until he was beaten and murdered.

His crime? Whistling at and talking to a white girl.

On August 24, while hanging out with his cousins, Emmett was caught in a dare. He had told the other youngsters a white teenager in a picture he carried was his girlfriend back in Chicago. They dared him to go into a small grocery store in Money, Mississippi, owned by the Bryant family and say hello to the white woman working there. Emmett went in, bought some gum with a couple of pennies, and then said, “Bye, Baby” to Carolyn Bryant, the storeowner’s wife.(source: bluejeansplace.com/Emmet…urderSite.html))
This juvenile prank led to a nightmare come to life. Three days later, two of Bryant’s relatives pulled Emmett from his uncle’s home, stripped him naked, beat him beyond recognition, shot him in the head, and dumped his body into the Tallahatchie River.

Dear Pro-Life Friend,

I had an interesting encounter at last Wednesday’s Truth Day in
Evanston, IL. But before I tell you about it, I want to let you know that the full itinerary for our summer Face the Truth Tour is now available at our website, including maps:
Code:
  [prolifeaction.org/truth/tours.htm#summer](http://prolifeaction.org/truth/tours.htm#summer)
So last Wednesday as we lined Ridge Avenue north and south of Davis Street in Evanston, a young man drove by the display of Baby Malachi pictures on his way to work. He pulled over and came up to me and Peter Shaughnessy, who is working with us this summer. He was furious – swearing, red-eyed, and threatening violence.

If you’re not familiar with the Baby Malachi picture, you can see it
here:

  [prolifeaction.org/truth/signs.htm#second](http://prolifeaction.org/truth/signs.htm#second)
My first instinct, given this young man’s behavior, was to call the
Evanston Police on my cell phone. Meanwhile, Peter tried to reason with him and calm him down.

After the police told me they would send out a squad car, I turned to tell the young man that the police were coming and he’d better calm down or he’d get arrested. At this point something changed. We noticed tears in his eyes, and he started walking away.

I followed him and asked if I could walk with him a little. He said
okay. We talked for about ten minutes, during which time the police arrived.I told the police things were under control now. Fortunately, they didn’t interfere.

We talked about the problems he was going through – a breakup,
abortion in his family, drug and alcohol problems. We talked about his faith. He was raised Catholic, but said he didn’t believe in organized religion.

He had all kinds of excuses for what’s wrong with religion, but he did say he believed in God. I told him he should try to get to a church that day, just go inside, sit quietly in the presence of God, and ask for help. He said he would, and when I shook his hand goodbye, he grabbed me and gave me a hug.

continued…

I don’t know what this young man’s involvement in abortion may have been. He denied it, but I suspect he has lost a child to abortion, either voluntarily or involuntarily. In any case, I know we were supposed to be there that day so that God could reach him at a moment of need.

That’s why we do everything we do. My father always says that pro-life activism is evangelism. “Go forth and teach,” our Lord commands us. We’re doing that out on the streets with our abortion pictures, but even moreso with the one-on-one encounters God in his great mercy allows us to have.

So please join us this summer. If you cannot be with us out on the street, be with us in prayer. I know that I was able to reach that young man in Evanston because there were prayer warriors backing me up, unleashing a gushing firehose of grace to extinguish his fury and open his heart --and mine.

I have “catholic” family in Chicago, all of whom I suspect support abortion. I will pray that your campaign reaches them.

God Bless you for what you do. You and all who work on the campaigns to end abortion are in my prayers.

Wednesday begins the 2005 Face the Truth Tour. All our callers in the Chicago area are invited to join us on the streets to take the awful truth of abortion to the people.

Good Timing for Truth Tour

Abortion is in the news these days, with the resignation of pro-abortion Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O’Connor, and speculation that she will be replaced by a pro-life Judge. Abortion is the issue on talk radio, in the news magazines and newspapers and on TV. The whole nation alive to the issue.

So now is a most opportune time to take the pictures of abortion out to the public. This is the ancient battle between good and evil. Protecting life is good , abortion is evil—it takes innocent, helpless life. People fighting to keep abortion legal are defending murder. It’s that simple.

Liberals call pro-lifers fanatics and ultra-conservatives, but pro-lifers are merely patriots who believe in this nation’s founding documents that seek what is right and good, not what is merely expedient. We pity those who need abortion and fight to keep it the law of the land. We will fight them until all abortions are once again outlawed.

The League has spent the last three days of Face the Truth in downtown Chicago where we are able to reach thousands of commuters. Each year a theme emerges and this year is no different.

Young Faces on This Year’s Tour

So far this year’s theme is the large number of people, especially young people, who have spontaneously join us or have asked for itineraries in order to join us at a future site. Many are drawn to our new t-shirts design with “Choose Life” printed in large letters on the back.

A group of three alternative-looking teens visiting Chicago asked if they could have t-shirts and literature. They’re going to wear the t-shirts all over Chicago and pass out our literature. We gladly gave them what they wanted.

A student from the School of the Art Institute told us that he is one of the only pro-lifers at the school and that there is considerable pressure to be pro-choice. He said that students are too afraid to even ask about abortion.

A staff member at the Art Institute asked for a t-shirt and said she was going to wear it when she went to work that day.

Counter-Protestors Make Us Look Good

The recent retirement of Sandra Day O’Connor has sent the pro-aborts into a frenzy. They have been out on the streets right along side us this year and they are aggressive. Two pro-aborts have already been arrested—one for spitting on two of our volunteers, a mother and her daughter, and another for grabbing a sign out of the hands of one of the League’s staff members and trying to destroy it.

Although the pro-aborts can be troublesome and even violent, one advantage of their presence is that they make us look good. Their appearance and demeanor are a turn off to the average person. As one commuter stated, referring to the counter-protestors, “I never gave this issue much thought, but after seeing them I’m on your side.”

Thanks for making our job a little easier.

Mayor Daley Sees the Tour

Among the thousands who have seen our display is our very own Mayor Daley. He was spotted this morning by several pro-lifers driving past our graphics pictures. Perhaps he too will have a change of heart. One can always hope.

We encourage you to join the Truth Tour, which goes until July 16. Hearts and minds are being changed.

Life Begins at Conception

All the talk about embryonic stem cell research has made people rethink the morality of in vitro fertilization. Wednesday’s Chicago Tribune had a front page article dealing with the issue. One Catholic woman said she knows she violated the church’s teaching by going through with IVF. She strongly supports stem cell research and she believes abortion should be legal for those who choose it.

But she said she felt morally obligated to the six frozen embryos she and her husband had left behind. Though she dreaded the thought of having a fourth child, she went through with hormone treatment to prepare her womb to receive the embryos. None of the babies survived.

It is obvious that deep down in side everyone knows when life beings—at the moment of conception.

God Grant Her Many Years!

On July 6 Joe and Ann Scheidler welcomed their thirteenth grandchild. Little Mary Macrina was born to Eric and April Scheidler. Eric is the League’s Communications Director.

I voted other because I both don’t live in the Chicago area and can’t be there, but I’ll pray for a successful tour. There’s a tour like it around my area though, and I’d love to go. Not sure if I can though… I think I’ve got an appointment when it’s on, but I could be wrong. If I am wrong, then I’m so there!

New Page Answers Common Objections to League’s Truth Tours

http://www.prolifeaction.org/truth/truth07.jpg Whenever we hit the streets with our large, graphic abortion signs, we can expect to hear some complaints from passers-by. The most common by far is the objection that children might see our pictures and become upset.

We take these concerns seriously, and respond to them as best we can through our Face the Truth fliers, e-mail responses and face-to-face conversations. Now we have gathered our best responses together in a new page in the Face the Truth section of this site, “Answering Common Objections”.

The following common questions are covered:
See also the new Face the Truth page, “About Our Signs”, with descriptions and commentary on each of the signs we use during our Truth Tours.
