I have a question/point in ya’lls favor here (I think!)

How is wearing a headcovering to church (or even feeling that you yourself OUGHT to wear one) any different than those of us who would never go to church in pants, but have no issues with other women wearing pants to church?

Thats majorly simplifying it I’m sure - and being a soon-to-be ex-protestant/new Catholic - I’m sure I don’t understand all that goes on. I just think the headcovering seems like a nice touch… so you go ladies!!!

OK ladies, I tried on the hat I wanted to wear, and I look really, really silly in it (although it is fairly dressy for a straw hat, I only actually bought it to keep the sun off me while working in the garden. My other hats are definitely not church-material).

I have some scarves, but they are covered with my company’s corporate logo, and I would look like a billboard wearing them.

Any other cheap ideas? (can’t afford to buy much at the moment) (I have very short hair, by the way, so I don’t know that snoods or headbands would work).

Either try the reminants at Walmart or cut old blouse into a square.
Fold to a triangle, roll from the point and tie it around your head. Instant headband. If it’s wide enough, it’s very chic with short hair.
Pick a solid color, it’s demure.

Well seeing as I have not yet been able to start attending Mass, I’m not even on the maybe list for this coming sunday - but when I do begin attending, I may join you ladies =)

(Long story short - I’m living back home with my parents during grad school and am waiting until I move out at the end of this semester when I graduate to start attending the Catholic church - I know we shouldn’t put off what we are called to do, but I don’t want to cause a major issue in my family by trying to start before I’ve completely decided that the Catholic church is for me, and I want to be able to explain it well to them as well - so it just seems easier to wait until I move out (and am living in a different city - since my parents and I go to the same protestant church here)

I do have a question about how one who was not raised in the Catholic church would go about wearing a head covering - would it be an acceptable thing from the get-go, or would that be taken the wrong way when one is a new Catholic (or even before confirmation)? Also as a gal with short blond hair, what do you think would be the most appropriate style of headcovering?

Second, it is the general consensus that “new” Catholics bring a faith and love to the church that is motivating and inspirational.

Third, having been raised Methodist, I understand exactly the position you are in being back at home.

Fourth, with short hair, I’d say something smooth and sleek would look best. Depending on HOW short, I would say the bandana look (which can be any type of fabric) or the small hats like I posted on page 1.

Fifth, we welcome you in spirit!

Oh Bear, I just remembered all the hats there are at my Super WalMart. It was mentioned earlier and it still didn’t actually hit me until now. A lot of red ones, but definitely a collection of church hats. Shopping trip today!

Forget Wal-mart!!! That just doesn’t compute in my house!!! We live right around the corner from one.

But seriously, they’ve got alot of cute litte knit hats for both winter and spring that are about 3 - 4 dollars a piece. They also carry those “red hats” for the red hat club or whatever it is. Blah! If any of you wear one of those, I’d even look at you funny!

Its amazing the folks I have found and read about online since starting to look into the Catholic Church - seems like a great number of us weren’t raised Catholic, and that two makes us new converts feel a lot better -for the same point as this thread - we aren’t the only ones!
 
count me in! I’ve been wearing a mantilla for two years as I attend a Tridentine church. From now on whatever church I attend , I’ll be wearing a veil. To me it’s a sin of respect, to cover myself before the Most High I’ll be thinking and praying for you all on Sunday

I have one of those…I love it. Beats the winter sky mask I have anyway. 😃

Seriously, I like it because it is very pretty, Blue/mixed with Gold, and large enough to tie behind or to the side on my neck, in a nice knot.

We make head coverings from squares of material. Some of the lace is real nice and one yard on sale is enough for two or even four if you only want short ones. Just make a triangle from a square. Cut along the pattern and you have a head covering.:bounce:

My daughter wears a snood to keep her hair under control. Then in church she places a covering over it. Quite nice to look at.
Now if ony the 22 month old would keep her covering on. Can’t even get her to let a ribbon in place for more then 10 seconds.
 
It seems that Dollar Tree (where everything really is still $1) has some pretty head hankies. I saw plaid, small flowers, and solid with a little bit of embroidery- all looked very nice, nothing too loud.
And, might I add, Dollar Tree is the company in which Ave Maria Mutual funds owns the most stock (a mutual fund geared for Catholics who do not want to have any part investing in companies that have practices contrary to Catholic beliefs). I love Dollar Tree!

This is OT, but I had to respond.

First, I’m glad you’re finding a lot of support and WELCOME!

I understand your delay in going to Mass, but may I offer a suggestion? I really wish you lived in my local area so I could at least give you a personal invitation.

Anyway, maybe you can find a good Catholic church with a daily Mass…I attend the Daily Mass at my parish, and I have to say that I like it more than Sunday Mass! (Don’t throw things at me anyone!)

The daily tends to be simplified…all the elements are there but prayers may be stated as opposed to sung, the homily is short, so the whole thing takes somewhere around 30-35 min.

What I love about it is first of all, those who wear head coverings attend daily mass so we don’t stand out so much. Secondly, it is short and to the point and I actually feel the impact. There is less potential for abuse as less is done and fewer fingers trying to turn the Holy Mass into a production. (doesn’t happen so much at my Church since we got a very orthodox set of pastors!)

Do you have any good Catholic friends? Can they direct you or do you question their orthodoxy? (hint…look for the way they live their lives, their stance on the Pope, contraception, abortion, and the Blessed Sacrament). If you do not have any Catholic friends do a web search of your local archdiocese and see if you can find a chruch local to you to visit. (if you need help with this PM me and I’ll help you in your search…I love investigation and this is a good cause!)

OK, back on topic. I didn’t mean to derail the thread, just wanted to address a need. You can visit a daily mass for a Catholic experience AND not let your parents know until you’re ready.

Hello and welcome. Nice to meet you! 🙂

You raise an excellent point. It’s dawned on me that now I’ve decided to wear a long turquoise lace mantilla to Mass, I had really better wear something nicer than my normal pair of pants with it! So now I’m thinking of a nice white sweater, and, not really being a skirt or dress person, I just may have to go shopping like mad this Saturday afternoon to come up with something in the way of a half-way … er, more than half-way, nice and presentable matching skirt!

~~ the phoenix, who is far more comfortable in cowboy gear for horseback riding or taking to the nature trails and who has actually attended Mass in an authentic Native American wool dress at a historical re-enactment where the priest wore French Jesuit Missionary black robes, hat, and a Native American yarn-sash alb from the style worn several centuries ago. (And yes, he was a real Catholic priest celebrating a real Sunday Mass.)

Well, that, and it seems EVERY head covering counts, not just mantillas of a certain color and/ or variety. THAT was what was sticking my craw, not the actual head covering itself for those who want them.

So, I may not be wearing a head covering on Oct. 2nd, but I’ll certainly defend your right to do so!

This is my first ever post, and I want to add, that the Mass and candlelight procession will be outside this Sunday,Oct.2nd, so more than likely women will be wearing headcoverings…I don’t see that it matters what is on your head, but more, what is in your heart. Annmarie :rolleyes:
 
🙂 I don’t know it the post I just wrote “took” or not! I remember the days when it was mandatory to wear something on your head…and those kleenex squares with the bobby pins stuck in were not as pretty as the veils I see today…
God sees what is in the hearts of all…veiled or not!
