I will be wearing a scarf to church. I wore one a few months ago and got weird looks so I stopped. But after reading some material on why we should where it, and the point behind it I decided to start wearing one again. I started last sunday, and didn’t get a single look. YAY!

I personally think it’s a good idea to wear a head covering. I will find what the book was called and post it here.
I don’t where pants to church, I dress up to go to mass. I am in the presence of Christ and will look my best.

People are required to where skirts below their knees to be in audience with the Pope, most people even cover their heads.
Why is it okay to do it for the pope, when in his presence. But when you want to do it when in the presence of the Lord we get mocked.

Like fasting on Fridays, and abstaining from meat every Friday of the year. Another practice that some people still impose on themselves is the fast before Communion. Church law requires only a 1 hour fast, but many people still fast from the midnight before. None of these practices are required, but they are still acceptable and permitted by the Church.
I just want to comment that the Catholic Bishops of the United States have said we are to abstain from meat on all fridays of Lent and Ash Wednesday, and on all fridays through the year, OR to substitute this with some other form of penance. Fridays are still days of penance. The Communion Fast for Latin Rite Roman Catholics is one hour.

Interesting thread, nice links to the modestworld.com site. Blessings!

:bigyikes: Sorry, I’m way behind here! (besides, i just wanted to use the silly bigyikes face! haha)

ForestPine,
I know this is totally of topic, but where do you get all the cool animated smiley’s? 👍

SmileyCentral. It is a download that appears in the top of the browser window. Our list is growing every day! Now don’t anyone forget. Maybe you should put your head covering in the car or on your hair brush while you think of it.

Tomorrow is the big day! Yippee! Hooray!

I’m off! My husband and I go to Sat. vigil mass by necessity. He works on Sunday. Let’s hope my bobby-pin skills aren’t too rusty.:gopray2:

I’ll be wearing my mantilla tomorrow…but I do that when I’m at mass anyway so I’m not sure I count…

Here it is, October 2nd.

I’m going to take my DW to mass and not say anything (like bock, bock) to her about ‘hats’.

Poor thing. She just doesn’t have the guts to do it. She knows the cats will shread her to pieces. The other day I said, “Oh, that’s not true”, but she said, “You don’t know, you’re just a guy…You don’t know what it’s like to be female…You can’t tell me what they’ll do, 'cause you don’t know.”

I’m just hoping there are some CA junkies in our parish who don’t mind riding the razor-sharp edge of being first, of being different.

She says she’ll do it someday (maybe). Personally, I don’t care if she does or not, I just think it’s sad that one is constrained from doing something that is good, for fear of becoming an outcast.

I like wearing a veil to Mass, but only do so when I am attending a TLM. I do not wear one when attending Mass at my regular parish, because to do so would be considered showing off…I think. I do carry one with me (in my purse) all times, though…not sure just why. It’s kind of like my rosary, which I also carry with me…I like to know it’s there if I should want to use it…I know I’m wacky, but what can I say?

I’m exactly like you! I used to attend a TLM fairly often, but don’t anymore, yet I still carry my black mantilla in my handbag! I’m not sure why. I don’t wear it at my own parish–I do know it would draw attention to me, especially at daily Mass, and, whether right or wrong, I can’t bring myself to have people focus on me or my head. Maybe I just a weakling.

Poor woman! It is VERY sad that this is the case in your parish for her. I have to say that I can identify with her fear. I used to wear a veil only when I went to the TLM, but my husband helped me get my guts up to do it other times, too. I guess it helps that I don’t know what “they’re” saying, if they’re saying anything. I suppose if anything ever got back to me, my courage would be seen for what it really is.

When I first started wearing it to the Novus Ordo (which we try to attend daily, as there is no TLM in our area), I felt SO self conscious it was very hard for me to concentrate, which totally negates the effect of wearing one in the first place. I would beg my guardian angel to shield me from people’s eyes so that I wouldn’t distract anyone else with what I was wearing. I would try to make myself think of the veil itself as shielding me from inquisitive eyes, instead of a sign that shouted "HERE!! LOOK AT ME!! :getholy: I’M HOLY!!! Eventually the feeling went away, mostly!

I’m sure you already do, but keep on praying for her!

I’m alive! I went to my regular mass with my husband. He had us sit in the front few pews to get my goat, I’m sure. 😃 I was unfazed. I went with a dark green scarf (I have red-gold hair), which did not slide off half-way through mass! I was hoping to give you all courage. I had the scarf sort of folded, so it was like a very thick band over my head and under my hair.

No one so much as said Boo! There was one other lady with her hair in a hairband. I know her though, and she is often like that, as she has curly hair. Maybe she was in on it though, I didn’t catch up with her to ask.

I should tell you, though, that I am the sort to put my hair up with a pencil  in a bun and sit in mass like that, so everyone already knows I’m odd.

Please all do share how it went for you!👋

What a lovely experience. There were about 15 other women wearing a head covering of some sort so I didn’t feel like I was standing out at all. It felt so right for me to do this and plan on doing it a lot more in the future.

First of all, Lorrie, what is a Forum Supporter?

Here is my tale.
I was really brave and bold about this because there are many women at my church who cover their heads. No big deal.

WELL, This just happened to be the Sunday that all of the Polish dance troops in the Detroit area go to a Historic Church and are blessed.

I was resolved.

I did put my chapel cap on. Honestly it was just normal for me. It seemed to fit with the beauty of this “Mini Cathedral”.

The thing I did notice is that our troops need a good lesson in how to behave in Mass.
Not my girls of course!

Oh poop. I guess I need to sign up yearly instead of that one time donation!

My wife, three daughters who have hair and about four other women wore veils or scarves at Mass today. As usual, no one commented.

I just got home. After searching in the stores to no avail for a proper head covering, dh and I made a late night dash to the fabric store last night. We made a scarf (dh sews beautifully–I am so very blessed!) which I wore folded in a wide headband today. I safety pinned the two sides at the base of my neck into a V and it stayed on great. No one seemed to notice at all. One gentleman stopped me on the way out and said hi and told me how nice it was to see a woman with a scarf on. He talked about how things were in church when he was growing up. I found it fascinating and learned a number of things. I just wish he hadn’t been smoking so that I could have stayed to chat longer.

How did it go for everyone else?

Being more observant of others wearing head coverings since I wore one myself today, I saw that at the indult Latin Mass parish downtown, most of the chapel caps or longer veils the ladies and young girls wear are simple white lace. Black lace comes in second in popularity among women; no girls wore black, but only white. One lace veil looked to be tinted a very mild pink. Most of the veils are long and flowing rather than caps. My deep turquoise blue mantilla was thus very distinctive, but as I wore a conservative grey skirt, white sweater, and powder blue vest, it seemed respectable enough.

As one of the main reasons I love the Latin Mass parish is due to its reverent quiet, no one made any comment to me whatsoever on the mantilla. It did seem that a few people noticed my mantilla, but any looks I received were modest looks of smiling approval or modest looks of serious respect.

As for how the mantilla affected my spiritual experience during Mass? It didn’t. Not at all. Unless you count the fact that I was better dressed for Mass than normal. The mantilla itself enhanced my appearance rather than detracted from it, which I will look at from the positive point of view and call it a good thing.

How about the rest of you? Hope all went well! :o

I feel terrible, I didn’t go to Mass this weekend. I have hayfever and woke with such a headache I felt sure I was heading for a migraine.

I feel as though I have let you all down and I am saddened that I didn’t support you who were anxious.

I have enjoyed reading the responses you have all made to your experiences.

Blessings to you all.

Helen
