My parish, St. Martin of Tours in Louisville, Kentucky, has two choirs, one for the NO, and one for the TLM. I auditioned for one or both of the choirs today. I passed the audition, and the music director said that I can officially join the Maris Stella Latin Mass Choir on January 4, after Advent and Christmas are over. I still love the Novus Ordo, if it’s done right like it is in my parish, but now, I have the chance to appreciate the TLM, and I never thought it possible since I’m totally blind. I love traditional Catholic music, so this is great news, and I just wanted to share it with you guies. The song I auditioned with was Franck’s “Panis Angelicus,” with both verses included. The music director thought that for right now, I would do better in the Latin choir than in the Novus Ordo choir, since I’m a new member, and the Novus Ordo choir learns a lot more music.

Congratulations! You’re rendering a very important service to Our Lord.

Thanks guies. I plan on posting some material from the choir on YouTube when I join. Unfortunately, there are no videos up of our Latin choir, but there are several videos featuring our Novus Ordo choir, which is still very traditional musically BTW.

You’ll probably see me a bit more on this forum, since I’m learning everything I can about the TLM. The biggest challenges for me will probably be the Gloria and especially the Credo, since it’s long. Fortunately though, I’ve figured out how to get my speach synthesizer to pronounce Church Latin almost perfectly, and I can modify the pronunciations as needed.

I am totally impressed that you will be singing in the Latin choir. I recently started attending the EF and the choir is just magnificent. The music just seems more ornate than what is used in the NO.

Fortunately, my parish is one of the fiew in the United States that celebrates the NO traditionally, still using mostly traditional music, and our NO is celebrated very reverently. After attending the NO at my parish, I don’t want to attend it anywhere else.

Our Latin choir is not yet as good as our NO choir, but the NO choir’s music director is scheduled to take over the Latin choir the first of the year, so it’s bound to get better. I hope that eventually, we’ll be able to sing Grieg’s Ave Maris Stella, like I think our NO choir can, but we have a ways to go yet. I also hope to join our NO choir soon.

Below is a link to one of the videos of our NO choir. The choir sings this particular song in English, but it still has that very traditional sound, and it is completely capable of singing in Latin.

Here’s another video, where the cantor for both choirs chants in Latin, followed by a hymn called “Crown Him with Many Crowns,” sung at a NO Mass for the Feast of Christ the King.

Here’s what my speach synthesizer sounds like when it reads the Pater Noster in Latin.

TBolt10001, Congratulations! I don’t live that far away from Louisville, KY (I’m about 30 miles from the KY border in TN), and I might have to make a drive within the next few months. It is amazing that despite your difficulties you are able to still serve with singing, and it has uplifted me.

God Bless!
Ericka
