Hi I’m a Catholic and I was wondering what i needed to do to join a Church? What type of documents do I need? I plan on getting married in the next 2 years so I’m trying to join my girlfriends church and I just need to know how I go about that. She is also Catholic. Thanks.

I would say to call the parish office and speak with someone there. They can let you know what is needed.

Is your girlfriend’s parish church the same one you would join? Just curious. Some parishes like you to join in your own parish church, but you can attend any church even after joining another. Call the Cathedral in your parish and ask what their parameters are. It is wonderful that you want to become a recognized part of a community. You probably won’t need any documentatio except for baptismal and confirmation certificates. If you were baptized and confirmed in the diocese you are joining they will have them on record. If not, then you may have to get them from the diocese where you received the sacraments. 🙂

Being enrolled in a particular parish is not necessarily the same as being a member of that parish. Normally, a person is a member of his/her geographical parish, whether or not he/she is “enrolled” in that parish. However, as others here have already said, irrespective of which parish one is enrolled in, one may always attend another parish (even regularly or exclusively).

The circumstances where one can select which parish to join are quite limited. Bottom line is, unless the parish in question is classified as a “personal parish” you would remain a member of your geographical parish unless you move beyond its boundaries. Similarly, your girlfriend would remain a member of her geographical parish unless she moves beyond its boundaries.

Simply go the office and sign up 👍

Before marriage you’ll be asked to prove your Catholic Baptism in order to be married in the CC without special Bishops dispensation.

God Bless, go often to Mass and Confession!

Every time I’ve moved or transferred to a different Catholic church I registered with the new church. I have always been asked to provide copies of my birth certificate, Baptism, Confirmation, and marriage certif.

Pretty much standard procedure.
