I apologize if this is in the wrong forum, this is my second post. But, I have a question and was hoping y’all could help me with the answer.

First of all, I’m only going through RCIA right now after I was reared in the Methodist church. (which I’ll admit, I’m really excited about… I can not wait to join the Church)

A friend of mine invited me to join a paranormal group, aka a ghost hunters group. Now then, they don’t use any mediums, seances or any of that stuff they only use scientific equipment. (Which I know the catechism speaks of necromancy and not to use pagan rituals.)

So I was wonder y’alls take on it. …and I will admit that one thing that does concern me is that I’m not in full communion with the Church yet

Contrary to what may folks suppose, the Catholic Church actually has NO teachings which contradict the possibility of “ghosts.”

Faithful Catholics are free to believe in “ghosts” provided the nature of these beliefs do not contradict any formal teachings of the Faith. And, of course, they are also free to pursue an understanding of “ghosts.”

FWIW, I believe in ghosts, as I once lived in a “haunted house” where *many *signs were present.

If indeed your reality has changed, as your name suggests, then you need to continue to pursue those things that are of the Church and not of the occult. In my opinion, “ghost hunting” and seeking the “paranormal” in the manner you propose is indeed a violation of the Commandments.

When one decides to pursue the Truth, Satan will often put distractions into one’s path. Opening oneself up to the occult is never a good idea. And, since you are currently being drawn towards the Church and its Truth, I suggest you have nothing to do with these things.

I would look at the group and deeply at your conscience to determine why the group does this and why you wish to join them.

Some groups are highly reputable (SouthWest Ghosthunters, for example) but others are more of the goth/occult ‘fanboy’ type)

If the group is legit, then examine your conscience to determine why you wish to be involved. After you have done both of these things, I would have a nice chat with the priest about it.

I would suggest you read a book called “Diary of an Excorcist”, at least I think that’s the title (it’s something near that).
I think after reading that book you will high-tail it away from any activity such as this.
The author talks about dabbling in the occult/paranormal and how dangerous it is.
Better off to leave this stuff alone.
If anyone can correct the title or supply the author, please do so.

ghosts are not demons. to get involved with demons would be dangerous. you will have to decide and look carefully at the group involved. welcome to the Church!

I see two listings on Amazon for “Diary of an Exorcist” both of these are written by protestants/pentacostals and are about the so called “deliverance ministries”

I think you mean “An Exorcist Tells His Story” by Fr Gabriel Amorth.

That’s the one! Thanks.
Anyway, as I recall he talks about not getting involved in anything supernatural, as it can open a door to the diabolical.
I’d just as soon go do something else and not take the risk.

Although there is not a specific teaching on ghosts we do know they are not souls who have not crossed over still lingering here with unfinished business. When you die your soul is immediately judged and you are either condemned and go to Hell or saved and go to Heaven, maybe with a stop in Purgatory first.
Its possible that God may allow us to glimpse a soul in Purgatory or Heaven for a reason unknown to us.
With regard to ghosts they are most likely to be from Satan.

Welcome to the Church
I’ve been in a paranormal group it can be really fun, but make sure you know what your getting in to. Some groups start out cool just going to grave yards taking photos & using scientific equipment. (Nothing wrong with that) But later some groups get weird which is what happened in my group & the reason I quit…I still hunt ghosts (just for fun) but I do it solo. The good thing is I don’t have to go far to get cool photos. I just go out side in my yard just before dark & I get cool orb photos. 😃 If you are going ghost hunting make sure to take holy water with you & to pray before each hunt. (The pray of St.Michael is a very good one to know)

P.s nice to see someone else saying y’all besides me 👍 👍

Read up. religiousdemonology.com/
See some of the links in my sig.
Stay away from pegan/wiccan/demonic/ anything that seems wrong. Make sure your conscience is strong. If you feel a heaviness or a depression in a house or building etc. leave. Dont attempt to comunicate with the dead. Always have holy water. Keep in strict line with the Churches teachings.

May I suggest an amusing, yet surprisingly thoughtful, book called “Will Storr Vs. the Supernatural” by Will Storr?

Storr, initially a lapsed Catholic and skeptical of the supernatural, describes his experiences among ghost hunters, demonologists and finally winds up at the Vatican talking to an exorcist. He is definitely less skeptical at the end of the book - and interestingly, his Catholic faith seems to have been somewhat rekindled as well (especially apparent during his visit with the Vatican exorcist).

It might give you food for thought and help you decide if this is something you really want to get involved in.

Should be available at most chain bookstores, and also thru Amazon. 👍

Welcome to the Church. You should talk to a priest about this. Using scientific instruments is fine, but there are indeed evil spirits out there. I’d like to add that research like this has been going on for years but no scientific body I’m aware of takes this seriously.

My 2 cents.

Peace,
Ed

Agree with Ed, seek first advise from a priest before indulging in such activity.
Christians were warned ag
ainst such observances “in which the demons represent themselves as the souls of the dead” (Tertullian, De anima, LVII, in P.L., II, 793)

Do you find you have to use good old fashioned “film” to get these orbs or can you get them with a digital camera?
I used a digital camera (its lot cheaper then having to get the film developed 😃 )
