St. Matthew says in chapter l2 "For even as Jonas was in the belly of the fish three days and three nights so will the Son of Man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth. My son is searching for the truth, but this is one of his stumbling blocks for believing in the bible and all its truths. Jesus was in the tomb Friday and Saturday night. Where is the third night/?

I love the interpretation given by Jen Schroder (from BlessedCause.org Ministry).

She comments that the “depths of the earth” doesn’t mean being buried, but rather it refers to the suffering he endured due to our sin. This started when he was betrayed and denied, and handed over to the authorities.

Jesus spoke about the famous “three (3) days” many times; In fact, he spoke about it ten (10) times.

Everytime, it starts with Him being handed over to the authorities. This occured on the Thursday night.

(Mt 16:21; Mt 17:22-23; Mt 20:18-19; Mk 8:31; Mk 9:31; Mk 10:33-34; Lk 9:22; Lk 18:32-33; Lk 24:7; Lk 24:46.)
 
If the evening and the* morning* constitute a “day” in Jewish thought and keeping of time…

The Hour of Mercy [the time from tradition that Jesus died] is considered to be 3:00 PM then Jesus died on Friday [day 1]

Our Friday night is really the beginning of the Sabbath - Saturday [day 2] Jesus had to be buried before the Sabbath began.

Our Saturday evening is the begiining of the first day of the week - Sunday [day 3]

Scripture states 3 days, not 35 hours…Jesus was in the tomb on three days…not for three - twenty-four hour period intervals…
