In reading the Navarre Biblical Commentaries, I’ve noticed several references to Josemaria Escriva, founder of Opus Dei. I would be interested in hearing opinions on his writings. I’m considering purchasing some of his books.

St. Josemaría Escrivá is an absolutely wonderful man with much knowledge and holiness to impart. I would highly recommend reading some of his books. You can find more information on him here, including some articles.

St. Josemaria had an amazing, intimate, loving relationship with God, which spills out into all his writings. I recommend Christ Is Passing By or *Friends of God *(or both!).

He is an excellent teacher, and his way appeals to me moreso than that of other writers. Recently, I read a book by Thomas Dubay, who is a favorite of many. Comparing it to St. Josemaria’s works, I found it kind of preachy and pedantic. It was full of “you shoulds.” On the other hand, St. Josemaria tells you about God and His love for you and leaves you no other choice than to return that love generously. He whispers the secrets of God into your ear and sets you on fire with love. Highly recommended!

Thank you for the feedback. I felt that if Navarre is including his writings in their commentary, he must be exceptional. Aside from the fact that he is a saint. 👍

Well…yes and no…

He IS exceptional. No doubt. One of my favorites.

BUT you must realize that he himself spearheaded the Navarre Bible project…so…they’re bound to include his writings.

Josemaria Escriva wrote a little pamphlet called the “Holy Rosary”, and he very gently talks about the mysteries of the rosary.

It is lovely.
