I’m reading a book called The Mystery of Joseph by Marie Philippe, and in it he says:

“The Church, in her devotion to Saint Joseph (most notably in the litanies that she addresses to him), invokes him as ‘Father of Patriarchs’, thus acknowledging the link between that Patriarchs and Saint Joseph.” -Philippe, 3.

How could this be? Wouldn’t Abraham or Adam be the father of Patriarchs?

There is litany to St Joseph that refers to him as “light of Patriarchs” right after referring to him as the illustrious (or renowned) scion (or offspring) of David. I’m not sure what is meant by “light” but based on what is said about David it seems to refer to Joseph being a descendant of the Patriarchs not that they are his descendants, as light of the sun refers to light coming from the sun not the other way around. Perhaps what is meant is that St Joseph is a shining example of the faith first exhibited by the Patriarchs.

The Fatherhood is more of a recognition of Saint Joseph being in that same line of patriarchs and yet surpassing the patriarchs before him. He is the Patriarch of Patriarch. The greatest of the Patriarchs for he was chosen by God to be head of the Holy Family. Unlike the patriarchs who were heads of the households of God’s people at various times, Saint Joseph was head of the household of God himself and his Holy Mother.
