I know that the elders were just teaching the truth as they saw it. I know this particular elder…Elder Oleson…really had no intention…INTENTION of deceiving me…it was the Bible he used…or at least one he used for this certain part of the discussions…but it still didn’t sit well with me…I was “confused” why he would not tell me…some 30+ years down the road…I know it was not his intention to deceive me…he was just anxious to share his message of the “Restored Gospel”…I’m glad I was familiar with the Bible growing up in the Nazarene church…or I wouldn’t have even questioned it.
Publisher,
I just happened to notice your posts about this subject of the Creation account. Are you familiar with the following KJV Genesis verses that show that a “spiritual creation” happened?
Genesis 2:1 Thus the heavens and the earth were finished, and all the host of them.
2 And on the seventh day God ended his work which he had made; and he rested on the seventh day from all his work which he had made.
3 And God blessed the seventh day, and sanctified it: because that in it he had rested from all his work which God created and made.
4 These are the generations of the heavens and of the earth when they were created, in the day that the Lord God made the earth and the heavens,
5 And every plant of the field before it was in the earth, and every herb of the field before it grew: for the Lord God had not caused it to rain upon the earth, and there was not a man to till the ground.
6 But there went up a mist from the earth, and watered the whole face of the ground.
7 And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.
8 And the Lord God planted a garden eastward in Eden; and there he put the man whom he had formed.
9 And out of the ground made the Lord God to grow every tree that is pleasant to the sight, and good for food; the tree of life also in the midst of the garden, and the tree of knowledge of good and evil.
It would have been very unusual for an LDS missionary to be teaching using a JST Bible, but not impossible. I would tend to think it more likely that he drew upon those above-noted verses from the KJV, then also quoted from the Pearl of Great Price:
Moses 3:1 Thus the heaven and the earth were finished, and all the host of them.
2 And on the seventh day I, God, ended my work, and all things which I had made; and I rested on the seventh day from all my work, and all things which I had made were finished, and I, God, saw that they were good;
3 And I, God, blessed the seventh day, and sanctified it; because that in it I had rested from all my work which I, God, had created and made.
4 And now, behold, I say unto you, that these are the generations of the heaven and of the earth, when they were created, in the day that I, the Lord God, made the heaven and the earth,
5 And every plant of the field before it was in the earth, and every herb of the field before it grew. For I, the Lord God, created all things, of which I have spoken, spiritually, before they were naturally upon the face of the earth. For I, the Lord God, had not caused it to rain upon the face of the earth. And I, the Lord God, had created all the children of men; and not yet a man to till the ground; for in heaven created I them; and there was not yet flesh upon the earth, neither in the water, neither in the air;
6 But I, the Lord God, spake, and there went up a mist from the earth, and watered the whole face of the ground.
7 And I, the Lord God, formed man from the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul, the first flesh upon the earth, the first man also; nevertheless, all things were before created; but spiritually were they created and made according to my word.
It would have been logical for a missionary being asked a question about the Creation to have used the Pearl of Great Price account as a supplement to the Genesis account. I think he should have explained his sources better to you. Perhaps he did carry around a JST Bible, but that would have been very unusual and would not have been what the mission president would have encouraged, at all. (Note that the JST account is very similar to the Book of Moses account in the Pearl of Great Price.)
By the way, I think the outcome was just fine in your having become a Quaker, which is such a strong, peace-loving faith.
