The truth is, I’ve dealt with enough Roman Catholics that I knew exactly what I was in for when I came here.
If you already know how we’re going to react before we do, then I must ask: why did you come here?
Your fellow Roman Catholic, Lance, just called me a redneck in another thread.

Go ahead and report him.
If you’re concerned about a post, report it. The mods are quite fair - moreso than at any other forums I’ve visited - and have chastised Catholics as well as non-Catholics when their words have crossed the line.

PLEASE

Remain on topic.

Catholics and non-Catholics are welcome to discuss beliefs and opinions within the realm of charity and intellectual honesty.

Just to lighten things up …

Joyce Meyers, Greg Laurie, Billy Graham, and the Pope all walk into a bar together. The bar keep says, “What is this, some kind of joke?” 😛

If the OP is Catholic, then the advice she needs is from Catholics.
I disagree with this assertion. You need the truth, whether it be Catholic, Protestant or other. However, since this is a Catholic forum, it is useful at least to say where you are coming from. I often (although not always) will identify myself in my postings as being Protestant. Then the reader can take the comments for what they’re worth.

I don’t like Joyce Meyers because she believes that Jesus will give Christians “health and wealth”. In reality, Jesus does not promise prosperity, but rather persecution to His followers in the Bible (John 15: 18-25).

I am not familiar with Greg Laurie. I have never heard of him previously, but I will check him out since the OP has mentioned him here.

Billy Graham is a wonderful man. Although he is a Protestant, he is definitely a friend of Catholics. A friend of mine from my Catholic church was a volunteer and prayer partner at the last Billy Graham crusade in Cleveland, Ohio. She said that he did not favor any particular Christian religion. If someone made a decision or recomittmant to Jesus Christ at the crusade and they were a Catholic or wanted to be a Catholic, that person was referred to a Catholic church. My friend prayed with the people who recomitted or wished to join the Catholic church. She also gave them information. She knows of people who did join the Catholic church due to their decision at the Billy Graham crusade. I did not attend that crusade because I was a lapsed Catholic at the time. Eventually, I did return to the church after one of my other friends took me to a Christian music festival and somebody gave me a Bible (which I actually read). Who knows, if I had attended that Billy Graham crusade, I might have gone back to the Catholic church even sooner. To me, Billy Graham is the closest to a Protestant saint that I know of. He also was a friend of the late Pope John Paul II.

I was raised Catholic and at my Confirmation I believed I was becoming a soldier for Christ. It was shortly after that when I realized there was little left for me to do to grow as a Christian and I started seeking ways of learning more about Jesus. I too listened to Greg Laurie in particular. He was preaching at a local church on Monday nights and I began attending. I didn’t realize before that I could have a personal relationship with God. I didn’t realize before that the Bible itself could be a tool I could use and study and learn from. It was such an amazing revelation. My mom was concerned that I was attending a protestant church and she encouraged me to speak with our priest. I did and he encouraged me to keep attending. He said that if it is drawing me closer to Jesus than go for it. He admonished me to please stay in the church and not abandon my Catholic roots. Much to my mother’s disappointment…I left that meeting even more encouraged. The priest gave me a book called “essentials in catholicism” to read to help me understand why the church decided that confessions were supposed to be in a little box to a priest, and why Catholics assert that the Eucharist is the actual body and blood of Jesus, why Mary is to be prayed to and why the saints are more special than the rest of us. I continued to attend Greg Laurie’s services and I read the book. I am an educated person and in my head I really attempted to determine what the truth was! It is true that Greg’s messages contradicted Catholic teaching in specific areas…the book actually helped me make my decision. It made me realize that much of what is followed in the Catholic church is a result of councils, and decisions by man…some of which contradicts the Scripture in the Bible or is an addition to it. And as I learned I realized it wasn’t Greg Laurie that I was following. It was the Bible and the teaching Greg was giving was straight out of the Bible. And not only that but I could read the Bible and learn Scripture that helped me in my everyday life to be strong in the Lord and live my faith in a way that I never knew was possible. Instead of going to church every Sunday and trying to be Holy and always feeling like I wasn’t ever holy enough…now I knew from reading the Bible that I was justified through my faith and forgiven through my repentance of my sins. And I would never be good enough that is why God sent Jesus to die for my sins. And it was amazing that it was so simple and yet it motivated me in a way that all the rules I tried to follow as a Catholic were never able to do. My life was now a true sacrifice to Jesus and my life was not my own because it was paid by His blood. I realized that I could have as serious a commitment to Jesus as the priests and the nuns. And I got to a point where it didn’t make sense to me anymore to attend Catholic Masses. Now when my Catholic family members are in need, they come to me for encouragement and prayer. They know I’m “right with the Lord” and they just don’t know how to access the peace they see evident in my life. I have not tried to “convert” any of them. And certainly don’t believe that anyone can convert anyone else. True conversion comes from God. But I do see things in a very different way now. It has been 17 years and I have not regretted my decision. I did not change religions. I changed my understanding of how my life on this earth relates to God and I realized its not about religion it’s about a relationship. And I am living a more Godly life now than I ever did as a Catholic. I am much more serious in my walk and part of it is because I know that God extended grace to me and gave me something I do not deserve, salvation. And because He loved me I love Him. Because He did so much for me, I have no choice but to honor Him and praise Him and glorify Him with my life.
So take my words for what they are worth. Just my own experience that I felt led to share after reading the posts. I found this site during a blog search. Just happened upon it. I hope you don’t mind a visitor’s perspective.

Well said… That relationship and knowing Christ is what it’s all about. Your words say it all. God Bless!!!

Uhuh, I certainly hope that you are not a hit and run poster but plan to stay around. I specifically would you appreciate you starting a new thread on each belief that you believe is not found in the Catholic Church. I am a convert from a fundamentalists background and I can honestly say that the Bible led me to the Catholic church.😃

Let’s don’t derail this thread though. Please do start some new threads.

What a beautifully written testimony. I, too, hope you will stick around. Welcome to the forums!

I was shocked when I viewed Joyce Meyers on Tv. I was wondering what the opinion is of Pope Benedict XVIs papacy mission on clarifying the theological purity of the Catholic Church and indeed Christianity ( the gospels and teachings of Christ)- sure there are what can most certainly be evaluated as mistakes in the history (and contemporary conduct) of the practice of those entrusted in the curia and clergy- or it may also be considered as an evolution presented by the Holy Spirit- I am most interested in the opinion regarding the fact that the papacy is a direct lineage of the chair of St Peter gifted by our Lord Jesus Christ. I wonder what the reality is of equal magnitude of sin present in the fragmentations of Roman Catholicism and the true interpretation of the validity and morality of the likes of Joyce Meyers and company.- also regarding Judaism- despite the reluctance of the Holy See to seemingly outrightly denounce the past conflict with Judaism, in practice they are making it clear the affinity between. - the fact remains that true Catholics indeed have a deep affinity, respect and admiration for Judaism as the New testament is squarely built upon its foundations and Jesus was in fact Jewish- also the reaction of the Jews to Jesus in his time enabled our Lord to be sacrificed to us and by us bringing humanity salvation- it is a great honor and in no way a crime at all- and it is in that sense the Jews were the chosen blessed people of God our Lord.I wonder of the opinion of a consolidation of Christianity into the sovereign establishment of the future Roman Catholic Church with The Pope as the representative of Christ and The Holy Spirit for all of those of Christ our Lord.

Back to the OP’s question … I listened to a fair bit of Joyce Meyer before my reversion. I didn’t hear anything noticeably anti-Catholic, of course that doesn’t mean it wasn’t there. Perhaps I had my ‘Catholic filters’ on 😃

Some of her practical advice and stories are quite good for those who are struggling with similar issues. I do wonder, however, what she’d think if I thanked her for bringing me fully back to my Catholic faith 😉

And no, never gave a cent to her or spent a penny on any of the merchandise she peddles.
Same here 🙂
She’s the reason I became a practicing Christian and after a couple years focused on my Catholic faith.
I did get 1 book of hers, the diet one 🙂

Greg Laurie’s teachings are in direct contrast of the Catholic Church. I used to listen to KWVE when I lived in San Diego, he’s a good preacher, and seems honest and genuine, but I either had to listen and believe him, or believe the Church. There really isn’t a middle ground when every major point he has on salvation, faith, works, Heaven, judgement, eschatology is in direct conflict with the CC, I chose the Church for better or worse.
What do you mean you chose the church? The Bible is what you should rely on not a church.

No offense but, how can the Bible lead you to the catholic church? I am sure there are catholic churches out there that are biblical but, most are more on religious traditions than actually knowing Jesus (our Lord). It is all about Jesus…Jesus…Jesus!!!

Sorry to butt in, but I am new to the forum and a new Catholic. I watched Joyce Meyers, read all of her books and even went to her shows. It was through Ms. Meyers and her teachings on the bible that brought me into the Catholic Church. The hard part that I had with Ms. Meyers is her feel good theology which is very trendy at the moment. I went looking for the truth and for me I found it within the bible and the teachings of the Catholic Church.
God Bless.

No offense but, please learn things before you post. I can guarantee you that there are people reading this right now & doing this…

Do you honestly want to know what the Church is or did you just come here to say what you think you know? It looks foolish.

God Bless

I personally don’t listen to Joyce Meyers, never heard of Greg Laurie, but really enjoy and respect Billy Graham (not the early, but the later Billy:thumbsup: )

As an aside, its mostly through reading the BIBLE that I am becoming a stronger and more understanding Catholic. And the Church came BEFORE the bible btw:rolleyes:

Praying to Mary, praying to saints, confessing sins to a priest, infant baptism, graven images (statues) in the churches and bowing down before them, and praying is unbiblical. Jesus is the only hot topic there should be. Where in the bible does it say to pray to mary, confess sins to a priest, and purgatory? The Bible also says that we as believers in Jesus are all saints (Corinthians 1:2) The infant baptism thing is totally unbiblical and unnecessary. If you look in the Bible no babies were baptized. You are supposed to be baptized fully emerged in water. Not sprinkles or dipping the head in. What is the point of baptizing an infant? They are not concious of sin yet.
