Several articles are floating around in light of His Holiness Benedict XVI’s recent comments regarding Condoms, Africa, and the AIDS epidemic.

In my defense of the Church, I have encountered several arguments from news articles like this one:

news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/programmes/panorama/3180236.stm

Where it is claimed by the news source that His Holiness claimed that condoms are “permeable” meaning they have holes in them that allow disease to spread.

For now, I cannot substantiate the claim that anything like that was ever even said. Does anyone have a reliable quotation?

I’m also trying to determine if this was a statement about all condoms, and if there is any scientific study backing this claim up.

I’ve been operating on the idea that it’s most likely he was referring specifically and purposely to permeable condoms (those made from lamb intestines for instance).

I would just like help confirming or disproving this idea.

Thanks for the help, and God bless.

I don’t know anything about this, but if a condom is “permeable,” what good is it???
This is really confusing; Is it just me?

You’ll notice the BBC story is from 2003:
The church’s claims are revealed in a BBC1 Panorama programme, Sex and the Holy City, to be broadcast on Sunday. The president of the Vatican’s Pontifical Council for the Family, Cardinal Alfonso Lopez Trujillo, told the programme: "The Aids virus is roughly 450 times smaller than the spermatozoon. The spermatozoon can easily pass through the ‘net’ that is formed by the condom.
No one in the Vatican has repeated such a claim since. I’d also point out that just because a Cardinal said it doesn’t make it official Church policy.

Thanks.
