I heard that JPII was a Carmelite (I would assume a third order)

Is this true?

And what other popes belonged to an order?

Yes it is true. Pope John Paul II was a Third Order Carmelite and wore the Brown Scapular.

I have been told by some OCDS that he was a Discalced Carmelite. I was also told by a Benedictine monk that B16 is an oblate to a Benedictine monastery in Bavaria. Don’t have any firm sources for either of these, though.

Do you know if it was discalced or not?

He was a Discalced Carmelite with a strong love of St Teresa and of both of the Carmelite Orders.

He wrote his Masters or Doctoral Thesis on St John of the Cross, if I remember correctly 🙂

The info about B16 is interesting though - somehow I always suspected that with his choice of Papal name he’d have to be connected with the Benedictines 😉
I didn’t know that Lily, thank you.🙂

I also don’t know whether Pope Benedict 16th is connected to the Benedictines, but it wouldn’t surprise me if he was.

Thank you and I will try and find some more information about Pope John Paul II’s thesis.
