JPII - Out of Step?

Commentators aplenty grumbled that the Pope had failed to “modernize” the Church. To which, several years ago, Joseph Sobran responded: “The old Pope is out of step with modern life! Well, I should hope he is. Complaining that the Pope is out of step with modern life is like accusing Moses of being out of step with the Golden Calf.” Mark Steyn of London’s Daily Telegraph said that “the root of the pope’s thinking — that there are eternal truths no one can change even if one wanted to — is completely incomprehensible to the progressivist mindset.”

The Catholic Church should remain to it true beliefs, JPII was not out of step, it is the people of the world which have strayed from their true beliefs.

Materialism and wealth can distort the true path of Heaven.

It is true that JP11 was out of step but thousands of people found that with humility it was possible to catch up a bit.

I can remember a time when, young as I was, I thought the Church was behind the times. How glad I am now that the Church did not try to keep up with the modern world. God truly sent us a holy and able leader when He gave us JPII. And I think He has done it again with Benedict. :angel1:

I’m glad that JPII was ‘out of step’ with the modern world, if ‘out of step’ means that he refused to compromise eternal truths for temporary preferences. I will quote someone much wiser than myself here:

A Catholic knows that if the Church married the mood of any age in which it lived, it would be a widow in the next age.
