First, look here: images.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://www.galinsky.com/buildings/jubilee/jubileeint.jpg&imgrefurl=http://www.galinsky.com/buildings/jubilee/index.htm&h=285&w=430&sz=18&hl=en&start=5&um=1&tbnid=ko4nFHYFabarKM:&tbnh=84&tbnw=126&prev=/images%3Fq%3DJubilee%2BChurch,%2Brome-%2Binterior%26um%3D1%26hl%3Den%26rls%3Dcom.microsoft:en-ca:IE-SearchBox%26rlz%3D1I7DACA%26sa%3DN

Isn’t this just the least Catholic-looking church you’ve ever seen? this makes me mad- and yet again I look at new Orthodox churches (scu has this one kosovo.net/news/archive/2005/November_10/1.html) and I think yet again 'wow, their’s is so much nicer, as are their vestments. I know, in this instance, the pope has nice vestments, but its not widespread in the Catholic church whereas it is in the Orthodox church. this makes me sad.

Certainly a strange church. Is there anything on the outside that indicates that it’s a Catholic church? Not much, as far as I can see - apart from the bells perhaps, and the fact that it’s in Rome means that more than likely it’s a Catholic church!

The inside has positive and negative points, I think. It is bright and airy which is a plus, but the window feature behind the suspended crucifix and the window in the wall to the right of the altar look out of place in my opinion. It’s very white - the congregation will be hoping the celebrant doesn’t come out in white robes for Mass: he might blend in a bit too much for their liking.

Another plus (coming from an organist!) is that they have an organ - so many post Vatican II churches are simply not suitable for housing a real organ - or parishes and dioceses are not willing to invest in a decent instrument. At least there was a specific place set aside to house an organ - although it will be extremely difficult to keep the organ in tune: because of all the glass the front row of pipes will go out of tune when the sun shines into the church!

Something else that I’ve noticed is that the seating seems to be all in the main nave - i.e. all pews are directly facing the altar. This is what I prefer - I’m not a fan of the altar being completely surrounded by seats as happens so often in modern churches.

A strange blending of traditional and modern - perhaps a bit too minimalistic for my liking, but I wouldn’t say it’s the worst design of church… there’s always something worse!!

The Orthodox church is indeed nice, and it is lovely that they keep to their traditions of church architecture - but when I see such churches I get a slight feeling of “seen one, seen them all” - I think it’s sometimes just as nice to have a tasteful blending of the ancient and modern, which is possible!

This is striking,

But this is very much more obviously a Christian Church…

Most modern Catholic churches don’t even look as striking as the one here. Even so, there is no cross or other Christian symbol on the Catholic building - a serious deficiency.

The problem is here…

An ugly, uninspiring and calvinistic interior of the kind designed to be as un-Catholic as possible. John Knox would love the whitewash job. Is there an altar there somewhere? Any sign of the Blessed Sacrament? No wonder mass attendance plummets.

As for this. Community Hall? Bus station waiting room? Supermarket architecture at its worst. How depressing.

Have the Orthodox controled their architecture better- ya obviously. It’s really sad that there are so very many ugly Catholic churches- I really hope it changes.

Charlie, I agree with you at least partially. this church, however, has almost no signs indicating that it is a church- it looks like a community centre. I honestly can’t believe the pope commisioned this.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

And, I think this church is beautiful.

there’s nothing that indicates its a church. The first 2 things I though were commerce building then community centre. It’s obnoxiously ugly- I honestly can’t believe that the architect made such a joke of what should have been a beautiful church- as I say the orthodox do it better- that’s not to say they hold the fullness of Truth- but they certainly do it better.

Isn’t this just the least Catholic-looking church you’ve ever seen?
it’s just more c—p, and it is unoriginally derivative of that Australian building and the Arab sail building. I’m really fed-up with the post Vatican II puerile, inane, egotistical and mute so-called church “architecture.”

These buildings go out of their way to say nothing about God, and something about the architects. The latter enjoy doing them because they are building monuments to themselves, their own originality, and always, boringly, to “light.” I don’t know these architects personally–I am just extrapolating from the fruit.

Catholic churches have no business not speaking of God first, most and always. They are there to provide a roof over the Sacrament of the Eucharist in the celebration of the Mass, most of all. God forbid, you would think, that an architect would underline that concept, rather than some pathetic dated thing of his own poor imagination.

Catholic church buildings down through time have been teachers of the catechism to children, to those who couldn’t read and the uneducated, and to each and every one of us whose eye wanders during the sermon.

This idiotic thing teaches nothing except that the builder is embarrassed about building a Catholic building.

IMHO!

It almost makes me think ‘How dare the Catholic church not fullfil its job of glorifying God through the beauty of her buildings’.

I’d like to see that line in the Church’s job description, please.

And you are the arbiter of beauty? I think not.

That fact that **you **do not find the building beautiful does not mean that it is not beautiful, nor does it mean that God finds it lacking and the efforts of those who built it unworthy.

Your concept of beauty seems very limited. That’s your perogative. Don’t try to impose it on the other 5 billion people on Earth.

1Ke there is a definitive beauty to some churches. For example, the Church of the Holy Sepulchre is filled with christian symbolism refelecting wall-to-wall Christian theology etc. this Church is just a building with nothing in it- nothing suggesting it is a church- yet another ‘spirit of Vatican II’ innovation. I’m assuming you are a ‘spirit of vatican II’ Catholic. Name one single thing in the Church that refelcts anything catholic except the crucifix. I can’t even see a tabernacle. It’s just not fair that this Church was biult as such.
