i’ve heard this expression before and i will admit that if you believe the bible they appear to be the first to believe in a monotheistic god.
however how can a people be a light unto the world when it is so closed off from the rest of the world? as far as i know throughout jewish history it has never been thier mission to evangelize the pagan world of their error. they were more a society unto themselves.
also according to judaism the righteous of all nations will have a share in the world to come, therefore they don’t want gentiles to convert to judaism. and even more orthodox jews simply will not consider a person jewish unless thier mom is a jew. that said a righteous gentile would have to follow the 7 i believe noahide laws, but he is still closed off from a community of worship, an island unto themselves, and without any sort of evangelization it is highly unlikely that they would stumble upon this truth anyway.
so what is a “righteous gentile” supposed to do? he has no book, no place of worship, no history to speak of. you can’t worship without a community to support you, therefore this idea of following the 7 noahide laws while being excluded from the judaism club seems unrealistic to me.
