Who is the true inheritor to the promises of God in the Old Testament the Church or the synagogue?
Has the Church’ teaching regarding modern Judaism changed?
Can Jews be justified without Christ?

According to the author of the Book of Matthew, the Jews blew it, big time, by rejecting Christ, and suffered the razing of Jerusalem by the Romans in AD 70, as a consequence.🤷

What do you think? As for the last question, a non-denom minister informed me that the only Jews in all of history who made it into heaven were eleven of the apostles. Does that sound correct?

No one is justified outside of Jesus Christ. Even the Immaculate Conception was made possible in anticipation of the saving death and resurrection of Our Lord.

Nevertheless, Paul wrote at length about God’s fidelity towards the Jews in his epistle to the Romans, and of the blindness of some of the Jews. There is too much to quote here, but here is one small selection: “Brothers, I do not want you to be ignorant of this mystery, lest you be conceited: blindness has come upon part of Israel until the full number of Gentiles enter in, and then all Israel will be saved…In respect to the Gospel, the Jews are enemies of God for your sake; in respect to the election, they are beloved by him because of the patriarchs. God’s gifts and his call are irrevocable.” Rom. 11:25a,28.

Quiz: When a non-denominational minister tells you one thing and the Church teaches another thing, whom do you believe?

There were 3,000 Jews added on Pentecost alone (Acts 2:41). I’m surprised that your minister doesn’t have a better knowledge of Scripture than that.

Not to mention this ‘minister’ presumably believes The Blessed Virgin Mother is in Heaven too, so that’s another Jew(ess) in Heaven.

I recommend never listening to a non-Denom for any teaching whatsoever, whether interpretation of Scripture or extra-Scriptural. There’s no reason to listen to one, except to see what distortions are being taught, so you can be prepared to counter with the Catholic Truth. God gave us the Catholic Church as the pillar and ground of truth. Why get info at a man-made church guaranteed to have error, even if mixed in with sprinkles of some facts and little truth here and there, instead of the infallible teaching institution Jesus built and supports! For me, I’m staying with Christ and His Church.

Hey, my friend, he is not my minister and we were on opposite sides of the arguement in a group discussion. I know for a fact that at the end more than 80 percent of the group, non-Catholics included did not accept his viewpoint. I didn’t think to ask him if Jesus, being a Jew, was saved only because he knew himself. How’s that for convolution?

Knowing the minister, I wouldn’t be so certain of that…

If ya’ll live somewhere where everybody you talk with in a group is Catholic consider yourself quite blest. Even up north here, only about a third of us are Catholic and even then one can be quite taken aback about what a fellow Catholic says. As John Paul II said, we need to start evangelization in our own pews.

I’m relieved to hear you weren’t holding his opinion up as something worthy of consideration.
Not to be unkind, but maybe there’s a reason this guy can’t find a denomination!

(A “denomination of one” is the terminology I like to use. 😃 )

As the Second Vatican Council explained, the Church is the People of God, the new Israel having its continuity with the People of God of the OT.

Why would God need to be saved? That doesn’t seem like a reasonable question to me at all.

What about the parable of the good Samaritan in regarding who is a brother ?

Cannot this thinking also be (theoretically at the very least) extended to salvation ?

Surely in the end it’s all up to God anyway ?

And if God is love, then love would have to (at the very least) be high up on His criteria ?

New Israel? The same Israel always existed. Its just that now the remnant of Israel is under Grace, NOT Law. The covenant is new, the hearts are new, we are reborn into Gods family. God has preserved the same remnant of Israel, and wonderfully, God has allowed Gentiles to be adopted into his family through Jesus Christ, making the Jew and Gentile equals, one new man in Jesus Christ.

No.

***All those of faith are inheritors of the promises of God. Before Christ, it was those Jews and others who came to have faith in God, the Father looking forward to and having faith in the coming of the Messiah (this would include Abraham and Moses, for example and the many other Jews and others of faith).

After Christ, it is those who have faith in, and accept, Jesus as Messiah, Lord and Saviour.***

Has the Church’ teaching regarding modern Judaism changed?

I don’t believe so - though there is a movement towards to the rediscovering and celebration of the Jewish roots of our faith.

Can Jews be justified without Christ?
I*** hope so. Scripture says that those who confess Christ will be saved and no-one comes to the Father, but through Christ. On the other hand, scripture also tells us (Jesus told us) in John that the Jews would not have been guilty of sin had he not come to them and performed the mircles or if they were blind - but now that they see and deny him, they are in sin. I’d like to think this means that we all have a choice to choose God and Christ, but if God blinds some to the truth (supernaturally - which Romans tells us is God’s plan re: the majority of Jews) or some have not heard the gospel, then salvation is possible. I believe the Catechism teaches this concept as well - perhaps this is part of the great mystery Paul refers to.

In any event - God is a merciful God and we are all in His hands.

Blessings,

Brian***
