Although there has been debate over whether Judas received the Eucharist, it has been believed by St. Augustine, St. Chrysostom, St. Thomas Aquinas (and many others) that Judas did receive the Eucharist.

This thread is not to discuss that.** Here, we assume that Judas did receive the Eucharist. **

Now, after Judas received the Eucharist, Satan entered into him (John 13:27), and Jesus told Judas to quickly do whatever he wanted . The question is, can Satan and Jesus (i.e. the Eucharist) dwell in the same body of Judas at the same time?

The Eucharist is not a magical talisman to protect the receiver from Satan.

However, the Eucharist is one of the incarnate forms of God the Son, Jesus Christ. In the form of man, Jesus’ body was handed over to Pilate and executed. In the form of bread, Jesus’ body can be consumed by someone not worthy, such as Judas. Because of the incarnation, Jesus Christ has freely chosen to allow his body to be abused and manipulated, and even consumed by individuals not worthy of its reception.

Satan being a purely spiritual being, and is not affected by the physical location of the Eucharist. Therefore, placing the Eucharist in the stomach of a person in mortal sin does not offer any protection. This is because in a state of mortal sin, the Eucharist cannot strengthen the soul of the receiver against a spiritual attack; the mere physical proximity of the receiver to the Eucharist does not itself repel Satan!

As soon as the Eucharist doesn’t look/feel like bread anymore, it’s not the Eucharist anymore. If Judas was a good chewer or had nice strong stomach acid, that wouldn’t have to take long.

Also, Jesus isn’t going to violate your free will. God gives us the power to choose good things or evil. If you’re bound and determined to sin in the Real Presence of Jesus Christ, you have the power to go right ahead and do it. So did Judas.

And when Judas chose to sin heinously, obviously Satan had every right to walk himself right into Judas and hang out with him.

Satan is a purely spiritual being, and is not affected by the physical location of the Eucharist. The Eucharist is not a shield, but it is the the body of a divine person. We must personally ask this person, Jesus Christ, for protection and not simply passively hide behind him!
Beautiful reply!!!👍

I can’t provide specific quotes here, but I am reminded of when Jesus was giving instruction to the Apostles before sending them out 2 by 2. He said (something like), "upon entering a town, go into a house and say, ‘Peace be on this house’. If they receive you peace will enter the house, if they do not receive your blessing will return to you.

I would think that it would be a similar thing with a sacrament like the Eucharist.

Peace
James

That’s a good comparison, I like it… But, isn’t it true that we don’t really know the exact reason why Jesus wants us to eat his flesh and blood? I have always been under the impression that aside from it symbolizing Him as being the paschal sacrifice and the “lamb”, I think that the Eucharist is ultimately a mystery. It’s just something that we mortals cannot truly understand -isn’t it?

In other words, God hasn’t revealed why He wants it, or what it does.

Judas received the Eucharist unworthily. He ate and drank judgment on himself, as Saint Paul said. Receiving the Eucharist while not in the state of grace is the height of sacrilege.

Well actually, weren’t all the Apostles unworthy since Jesus had to die, descend, and rise again before any of the sins of man could be forgiven?

None of them were necessarily in a state of sin, but Judas was.

Anyway, Jesus would forgive people’s sins often before healings, if I remember correctly.

Hmmm. This view seems to make sense, although some backing from church documents for this would really help.

This view also makes sense. Satan was also in the proximity of Jesus when he tempted him in the desert.

We know the exact reason why GOD wants us to eat the BODY & BLOOD of HIS SON our LORD JESUS CHRIST, “…unless you eat MY BODY and drink MY BLOOD you shall not have eternal life within you…” paraphrase.

Yes, it is very much a mystery, but the reason why GOD desires it is crystal. Through the consumption of HIS SON, in the state of grace, we enter into the perfect “personal relationship” with JESUS and receive from HIM the santcifying grace necessary to grow deeper in the faith, and through HIS sacrifice and mercy, be granted eternal life with HIM, through HIM and in HIM.

JESUS cannot “come out of” the host. If you receive HIM in communion and you are in a state of mortal sin, you receive HIM in the state of HIS passion, injured, wounded in chains and suffering as your mortal sins inflict the wounds upon JESUS. And to do so is to committ even greater mortal sins.

Yes, this is all true. It’s just that the Eucharist is a very important Sacrament and is an important part of the Mass… We don’t know how it works, or what exactly it does to our soul but whatever it is, God wants us to accept it… Like any good gift, you never really know what it is until the time comes to unwrap it -so I suppose we’ll just have to wait. 🙂

What? Are you claiming that an infinitely powerful, infinitely good God can be inflicted wounds by a mortal man with mortal sins?

This is not what St. Paul taught.

1 Corinthians 11:29
For anyone who eats and drinks without recognizing the body of the Lord eats and drinks judgment on himself.

It is us who is harmed, not Christ.

Well, it’s hard telling not knowing… We don’t know how God is effected when a man with unconfessed sin receives the Body and Blood -but you’re right that it certainly effects the sinner.
