You are right you don’t know me but you insist on speaking to me like you do. I don’t care what you require.

I am 50 years old, where do you get off telling me how to live my life? I would not dare to criticize or question you about yours. I don’t have the right.

I expressed how I am choosing to live my life,** if you don’t like it…TOUGH**. I don’t know you. I don’t owe you an explanation just like you don’t owe me any on how you are living your life.

I joined this Forum hoping to experience some compassion.
Oh well, never mind.
Wow, calm down.

All I am saying that if you want to state your OPINION, you need to say it as such.

By saying that women in the Church were lied to, but to refuse to say anything else amounts to it being your OPINION.

And by saying that, you are also questioning how others live their life.

If you want compassion, you might give a little compassion, rather than jumping on someone that does not agree with you. Rather than saying TOUGH.

Personally I don’t wear a veil because the kind I would prefer to wear would really make me stand out (I love scarves so there’s sooo many that I could wear if I didn’t think it would draw a lot of attention to myself, and I also like black lace mantilla’s). I also do wonder if I would be doing it as a fashion statement.

I’m not opposed to women wearing headcoverings at all. I’m a little curious as to why it’s generally mantilla’s that women choose to wear as opposed to other headcoverings though. Is their any particular reason? But I have no problem with women choosing to cover their hair for Mass.

I don’t veil because in our teeny-tiny parish, it would be a huge distraction to everyone else… “what’s going on? why is she wearing it? does she think she’s holier than us? was there a memo from Father we missed?” Its a beautiful custom, but very prone to affectation. I always loved the way the Jewish mother greeted the sabbath with her veil on and then lifted it to also cover the candle, then says the prayer and waves her hands over the candle… Rituals, sacraments and sacramentals – I just can’t get enough of them.

Speaking of veiling, its not the head I’d like have covered on some of the women and especially teenage girls in our parish. I remember 2 Good Fridays ago when a teen bent over to kiss the Crucifix held low – the entire congregation got a good look at her thong. Ewwwww – too much information!

I remember going to the World’s Fair in New York in 1964. It was 100 degrees, and my mother (Jewish) was determined we all got in to see the Pieta in the Vatican exhibit but due to the heat, she forgot to pack scarves – and we were all dressed in summer shorts and sleeveless shirts. She managed to scrounge up kleenex and we all marched in there with kleenex on our heads, one hand to keep it in place. Seemed so funny, but we forgot all about it when we saw the Pieta…

My Mom is Jewish, but she was fastidious about following Church protocal, bought Mass cards for all her friends, and was always the one to drive the Catholic girl scouts to Mass on camping weekends – mud covered or not. My Mom is still Jewish, but she loves Catholics and was very happy when I converted.

Mantilla’s are easier to come by. There’s just not hats out there that don’t look like you’re going to the beach or a picnic for the summer. It is easier to find nice winter hats. I’ve always love to wear hats. Though black or white seems to be the main chose for mantilla’s and me being an artist one of it’s down fall is I like things to match. So because I also sew, I dicided to make my own. I figured if I bought a hat to go with my Sunday dress it would coordinate so why not my veil? No one seems to have a problem if a man shows up for Mass wearing a suit and tie, looking thier best for the Lord then why do some people have a hard time with women covering thier heads, maybe even pretty.
I made me a little hat to match my dress for when I am EMHC as to not make my priest cringe, he doesn’t care for women wearing mantilla’s,neither does he like hand bells and thinks the phrase “offer it up” is just an old cleeshay(sorry I have no idea how to spell that)I had resigned from EMHC but was accidently schedualed so Fr. will just have to grin and bare it.
I do cover my head at home when I spend my time with the Lord in pray. The thoughts has crossed my mind that “really I should cover my head all day if my work is prayer to God” as in the Opus Dei way of living but I’m not there yet. These things are like sacramental. or inother words Holy reminders. I wear a large crucifix to remind myself to pay attention to how I am behaving,am I behving in a Christ like manner? ,the veil, that I am about to be in the true presants of the Lord and so on.

I’ve worn silk scarves with patterns before, and I have two black lace mantillas which I usually wear. My scarves are colorful sometimes, and match what I’m wearing, and my favorite one is a beautiful sheer silk chiffon, solid black, with big silver dollar sized white polka dots on it. 😃 I’m covering my head - not making a fashion statement. If a scarf is more comfortable for me on a given day than a lace mantilla, then that’s what I grab.

I’ve never really understood the whole “people might look at me”, or “people might say things” issue. Why in the world would anyone care what anyone else thinks about a personal devotion? If they don’t like it, or don’t understand it, then they can just deal with it, or it can be an instance of educating someone on why you choose to cover your head.

If someone feels that out of respect for the Pope they should cover their head in his presence, why in the world would you NOT cover your head when in the presence of Christ? 🤷 It’s how ***I ***wish to honor my God - and some folks who just have to get their panties in a bunch over stuff can just go and find something else to get offended over. And don’t get me going on the whole feminist issue.

AMEN sister:byzsoc:

This is one of my favorite topics. I usually have a hat on in the San Francisco foggy weather where I live. I wear something on my head for any weekday masses I attend. For the weekend mass, I have started to wear a lace veil. I’m usually the only one. If I keep doing it, I will stop feeling uncomfortable about it. It’s as though my sister parishioners with their uncovered heads have a “we don’t have to so we’re not going to” attitude. My attitude is, “I don’t have to but I want to.” I think it’s a little sad, all those uncovered heads. It’s as if something has been taken away from them. Some of them even discussed it with a priest. Why bother a priest about it? Even when the ladies should be wearing a hat for warmth in the cold wind, they don’t. What is this supposed to prove? Yesterday my friend put her rain hat on after leaving the church. Some women remove their scarves when entering the church. I don’t get it.
My lace veil enhances my experience of the mass. To each her own.

Liza, 👍

Thank you so much for what you said. I feel the same way. I am here to please God and I literally have no concern for what others “think.”
I find it amusing to see the people running to and fro trying to please everyone. Poor Clueless People.👋

I also want to mention to anyone interested that there are a great many groups at Yahoo to join for support if you cover or are curious about it. Two that I like are called Full Of Grace and the other is Headcovering.

There is no “flaming” allowed. Everyone is encouraged to express their opinion but it is done sweetly, calmly and charitably.
I have never been told that I “need” to explain why I feel as I do.
Unlike some places I could mention.

Please forgive me if this doesn’t work, I am computer “stupid.”
My husband had to show me what to do. I have never done a cut and paste before.

Let me try it first myself just to make sure it works.
WOW, it actually worked. Hey, the old lady just learned something.
