I’m confused regarding judgement day. I know that at the end of time, we are all judged and either we go to heaven or hell. However, are we not judged when we die? What happens to the souls who are already in heaven? Surely, they are not judged twice? Also, I was browsing around this website and came upon a post that stated that the body and soul reunite in heaven after judgement day. I have never heard that before. I was always under the assumption that we would not have “bodies” in heaven? Can anyone clarify? Thanks

Heaven is not forever. You could say that when you die you are judged and will go to a)heaven, b)purgatory, or c)hell. I’m not too sure how “long” you stay in purgatory but no one knows if you stay there till the final judgement or not.
Either way, you will be a spirit till the end of this world. In the end, God will remake the world for us, and we will be united with our bodies once more. Jesus is already resurrected, and Mary never died, so they will be waited for us in this paradise. I wonder if we’ll be able to meet the Holy Spirit though in Heaven. 🙂
That is what we are, enfleshed spirits. We are human, which has a physical and spiritual side. Angels are pure spirit. We will be spirits only as long as God intends, but in the end, we will be what we are meant to be.
This is something that sadly is hardly understood by many people.
So you will be in a perfect paradise as a man/woman again, flesh and bone and spirit, in happiness for eternity. Or you will be re-united for eternal suffering and torment in hell with your physical body. That is what is taught.
Also, you cannot go the Hell first and then at the last judgement go to heaven, anyone sent to hell, stays, for eternity, they just get compounded suffering with a physical body. The final judgement could apply to souls in purgatory (but they could only go to heaven since purgatory is for those who are already saved) as well as souls still on earth but those in heaven should be fine.

In death you enter eternity, and there therefore no “time” between the “2” judgements. So no, you are not judged “twice.”

And of course you have a BODY in Heaven. You need one to be alive; you are a human being, you require a HUMAN BODY. Just like our LORD.

There are many, many judgment days but you do not get judged but once. Your judgment occurs at death “particular judgment” Catechism 1021. At the end of days Christ returns, and judges all who are (were) living, and will/may do something with the dead in purgatory and hell. We know little about what will occur at the end of days. Saints are people sent to heaven at particular judgment but what will happen to the people of purgatory and hell is a mystery. At the end of days your body is reconstructed (in some form). What you will do with your body is unknown. The people of purgatory who are being purified maybe many, or few. We know little about the population of purgatory or if the conversion from purgatory to heaven is rapid or slow. So in the end you know those who do well become saints, those who do not receive a different fate.

Hope that helps

One day sooner(because I believe due to the signs of the end times) not later there will come a judgment day…For those trusting in Christ our (WORK) will be judged(1Cor.3) not if were are saved or not…What we did for Christ will will either be ash for fleshly work or gold /silver(work as unto the Lord)… Those who died in unbelief will be judged by other criteria…

And I saw the dead, small and great, standing before God, and books were opened. And another book was opened, which is the Book of Life. And the dead were judged according to their works, by the things which were written in the books. Rev 20.12

Followers of Christ will be in the book of life…I imagine OT Jews will be judged according to the law…I imagine a dreadful time fro those who chose to deny Christ…What I imagine scarier are those with a lukewarm faith as He will spew them out of His mouth…Those who love Christ and are obedient to His word should have no fear(He will keep in perfect peace those who are trusting in Him). As for our resurrected bodies we will get them at the rapture when those believers who are living will meet together with believers rising from the grave and together will meet Him up in the clouds…As for Paul and absent from the body, present with the Lord, I believe that to be our spirit awaiting our resurrected body.
As for Mary bodily ascending to heaven, I think only those in The Catholic church believe that from their tradition…The rest of Christianity believes she went to the grave like any other human…I’m not sure if that is something ytou have to believe in order to be Catholic…As with what is written it is from a non catholic and sacred scripture so you can take it as face value…

Do a word search for “judgment” in the scriptures and glean out those related to the end.
May you be encouraged by the scriptures and be drawn closer to our Lord…K

I am not too sure about this point. I seem to think I was taught that our human bodies are less than perfect and would hold us back in Heaven. Jesus and Mary have gone “up” body and soul, but I do not recall anyone else.

As I have been taught, there are two judgements: When you die, you go before the Lord in “Particular Judgement”. At that time the decision will be made as to Heaven, Purgatory or Hell for you. That’s it. No do-overs.

At the end of time when Jesus returns to Earth there will be “Final Judgement” where four things happen:
(1) Those not yet dead go through Particular Judgement and go either to Heaven or Hell (why no Purgatory? Becasue… )
(2) All souls are released from Purgatory into Heaven
(3) Those who are already dead and have gone through “Particular Judgement” now stand before God where their particular judgement is affirmed for all to see (hence the phrase in the Creed “…to judge the living and the dead…”. Again, this is a confirmation of particualr judgement, no do-overs, no second chances.
(4) The bodies of the dead will be raised and we (remember we have no bodies when we die, we are spirit only) will be re-united with our bodies and live with God forever.

Our Human Bodies are less than perfect, owing to hectogenerations of genetic entropy; but we will be given new Spiritual Bodies in Eternity. A Body does NOT hold you down, Body enables you to be. Seeing, smelling, moving, even feeling and knowing are all things we use our Bodies for (eyes, nose, limbs, heart and head are all body parts). Bodilessness, if we experienced it for any “time” at all (there is no time in Eternity) would be a hideous punishement, not “Heaven.” (Think of being bound, blindfolded and nose-plugged indefinitely. Then imagine a dose of amnesia on top of that.)

We are not spirits, were never meant to be, and to become so would be a punishment.
We are human beings. And a human being does not “have” a Human Body, he/she is a Human Body + psyche.

ICXC NIKA.

I have to respectfully disagree. A human being is a human body + a soul.

When we die, the human body dies with us but the soul, which is not physical but purely spirit, rises to meet the Lord and is judged. We exist as spirit in Heaven or Purgatory or Hell until the Final Judgement, where we are reunited with our bodies.

Your question involves what is the “General Judgement” and the “Particular Judgement”.
On this site above you where you click to enter the forum is the Catholic Encyclopedia. Look up the “General Judgement” which is Judgement day and then look up the “Particular Judgement” which is when you die.

I found this on the Quick Questions section:
**
Q: Why do we consider the general judgment as a judgment if we have already been judged? The particular judgment cannot be reversed.
**
A: The purpose of the general judgment is not to redetermine one’s standing with God but to reveal the full ramifications of all our good and bad deeds in relation to other people. Although we will know instantly all the good and the bad we have done at our particular judgment, only at the general judgment will we see what effect the way we lived had on others and thus truly understand the ultimate significance of our moral acts. The Catholic Encyclopedia says:
“Those who depart this life sometimes leave behind them children who imitate the conduct of their parents, descendants, followers; and others who adhere to and advocate the example, the language, the conduct of those on whom they depend, and whose example they follow; and as the good or bad influence or example, affecting as it does the conduct of many, is to terminate only with this world; justice demands that, in order to form a proper estimate of the good or bad actions of all, a general judgment should take place.”
from here

So it seems that the General Judgment is simply a “sign, sealed, delivered” type of action, finalizing our Particular Judgment.

We will have a ressurected, glorified perfected body that will not have the limits of time and space our body has now, and will not be subject to corruption. Think of Mary’s bodily Assumption, that is what we will be like. The Church does not teach that Mary died, BTW. It only teaches that at the end of her earthly life she was assumed body and soul into heaven. (CCC 966). In the Eastern church they call it the Dormition or “falling asleep”. But sleep is an euphemism for death also. There is no official teaching that Mary did not die, and there is an old tradition that she did.

In the OT, both Enoch and Elijah were taken up bodily without having died.

First let me say I believe whole heartedly in purgatory, heaven and hell, etc. This wouldn’t have occurred to me if it weren’t for reading this article yesterday insidecatholic.com/feature/catholic-parapsychology-an-apostolate-to-the-holy-souls.html. So, if in purgatory we have no bodies - what of those stories where burnt hand marks appear , etc.
Inside Catholic:
In reaction to the publication of my book Hungry Souls, which deals with empirical evidence for the existence of purgatory – namely, apparitions of suffering souls and the concrete traces some of them have left (burned-in hand marks, finger prints)
Are they spiritual hand marks? If that stuff is genuine how does this all work? Can we even guess?

Thank you for the link, PG; I will check it soonest.

In answer of your question: “There is a natural body, and there is a spiritual body.” (1 Co 15). The hand marks, if genuine, are made by the hands of one’s spiritual body.

You remain a human being in the “next” life, which implies embodiedness. There is no time for those who inhabit Eternity, so there is no experienced time lag between your natural form and your reassembled Heavenly (assuming you made it) being.

God Bless and ICXC NIKA!

At the final judgement, your judgment will be known to ALL. This also is were the body will be united with the soul in the perfection union.
