My friend brought this up today and I was also stumped by this:

Judgement could be considered a mere formality at this point, though, since God already knows your fate and the results of every decision you will face in your life. It strikes me as implicit that at the moment of creation God knew the fates of every human to walk this planet of His and therefore could (and might have) judged them accordingly at that moment.

Since God knows our fate from creation, why can’t we just be judged at the moment of creation?

Because God is just, and He calls us into His justice - His righteousness. He created us for Truth - which means, for our communion in and with Him in love and in justice. Thus judgment is for what we have done.

Also, there are two judgments - the individual judgment immediately upon death, and the public Final Judgment at the end of time. In the individual and private judgment immediately upon death, there are three possibilities: heaven, hell, or purgatory on the way to heaven. The Final and public Judgment is after the resurrection of bodies of all the dead, when all will be judged publicly in our resurrection bodies. From this Judgment, only two possibilities follow, which confirm the private judgment: heaven or hell.

Because of this public Judgment, all men will be able to see and glorify God for His perfect justice. All men - those in heaven and those in hell - will know the perfect justice of our God.
