Judges 21:10 NLT: 10 So the assembly sent 12,000 of their best warriors to Jabesh-gilead with orders to kill everyone there, including women and children. 11 This is what you are to do, they said. Completely destroy[a] all the males and every woman who is not a virgin.

How do I interpret this?

Why is there so much killing in the Bible?

Because the human culture had become so depraved. It would have been impossible for the Israelites to become a nation and establish a culture founded on God’s laws if they were to live amidst such a wicked culture. They had to have a land of their own, separated from the others. War is the way God sanctioned to acquire the land He had promised Abraham.

Something to ponder: consider how difficult it is today for Christian parents to rear children who will value and live their Christian heritage. We are beginning to experience the “Canaanite” culture - where the laws now sanction acts contrary to God’s laws; where the number of people rejecting God’s moral law is increasing; …

“Ritual human sacrifice” usually designates a sacrifice that is part of the religious ritual offering to God. God **never **established ritual human sacrifice for the Jews. He found such ritual abhorrent. He forbade the Jews to practice it.

*Deut 12:31 You shall not do so to the LORD your God; for every abominable thing which the LORD hates they have done for their gods; for they even burn their sons and their daughters in the fire to their gods.

Jeremiah 7:31 …to burn their sons and their daughters in the fire; which I did not command, nor did it come into My mind.*
