This priest explains that a pope once officially explained that the soul is admitted at once either to the beatific vision, to hell, or to purgatory.

This follows from the Gospels, he explains. In the parable of the rich man and the beggar suffering at the rich man’s door the rich man enjoyed his wealth and ignored the poor man. Then they both died. Jesus said the poor man was in heaven then, and the rich man in torment. (Luke 16:19)

At too as Jesus was on the cross, he told the “good thief” that today you will be with me in paradise (Luke 23:29-43), this priest also points out.

“It is the common and traditional theological tradition that this Particular Judgment occurs at the time of death and consists of an interior illumination which makes known to the separated soul its state in relation with God – a reward or a penalty,” this priest explains.
