Do the faithful in the United States still have to abstain from meat this Friday? May seem like a silly question, but, since it is not a Catholic holiday, and there is that seperation of church & state, but, all omnivores would like to grill this day…

I haven’t heard anything one way or the other, which is why I ask. I post here because I am supposing this would be under, “Vatican Rules.”
 
We may do some other type of penance, such as pray the rosary or pray some of the penitential psalms or do acts of charity, etc. Going meatless is the ordinary means of penance but not the only means of penance on a Friday. I haven’t heard about a dispensation, probably because one isn’t needed since this is not the season of Lent.

Abstaining from meat isn’t required outside of the season of Lent. It’s still recommended. As a PP mentioned, doing another form of penance will suffice.
 
It’s First Friday, so for your penance you could go to Mass and then after the Mass recite the Litany of the Sacred Heart. 🙂
 
We will not be eating meat on Friday. It may be 4th of July, but it is still the day we do penance for Christ’s death for us.

It’s all about priorities I guess. 🤷

It’s not so much about priorities for me as what I would typically do. I pick a penance each Friday. Sometimes, it’s abstinance. Most of the time it’s something different. I congratulate you for maintaining your typical penance even though it’s a holiday.

That made me think, it’s a good thing Thanksgiving is always on Thursday! :dancing:

Definitely fireworks. I don’t think I will ever be holy enough to abstain from fireworks on the 4th. After all, it’s my birthday. 😛

And for that, we should really celebrate in a big way. 😃

I know that there has been another thread on hear saying that abstaining is not just through Lent. …Or, at least I read it in one of the Jimmy Akin articles.

I don’t eat fish, (if I am not allergic, which, I think I am…and I don’t want to test this, lest have another bad experience) I don’t like it, so, grilled fish is not a choice for me. And grilled corn just isn’t the same. 😦 If it is still a meatless Friday, if no general dispensation has been given, I’ll abide by it, but, I was just wondering if anybody has heard anything. What has been the case in the past? Should I try this question in the, “Ask an Apologist,” folder?
 
Starting December 2, 1966, the USCCB gave the go-ahead for Catholics in the US to eat meat on Fridays.

It was suggested, but not required, that another penance, preferably something widely noticeable, (like not eating meat on Fridays was) to be substituted.

But now, the “old” rule of no meat on Friday exists only on the Fridays of Lent (and Ash Wednesday).

There have been whispers that the Vatican may recind the dispensation that the USCCB has, largely because most of the rest of the world still does it and hardly anyone substitutes anything. But so far, only whispers.
 
Sorry for all you super-piety types, but there is a dispensation to allow us to eat meat in both the Western and Eastern sides of the Church in the USA for this coming Friday…

Days of Penance

Can. 1249 The divine law binds all the Christian faithful to do penance each in his or her own way. In order for all to be united among themselves by some common observance of penance, however, penitential days are prescribed on which the Christian faithful devote themselves in a special way to prayer, perform works of piety and charity, and deny themselves by fulfilling their own obligations more faithfully and especially by observing fast and abstinence, according to the norm of the following canons.
**
Can. 1250 **The penitential days and times in the universal Church are every Friday of the whole year and the season of Lent.

Can. 1251 Abstinence from meat, or from some other food as determined by the Episcopal Conference, is to be observed on all Fridays, unless a solemnity should fall on a Friday. Abstinence and fasting are to be observed on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday.
 
And now people over age 59 don’t have to fast? I believe didn’t the Pope make that official last Lent?

They still have to abstain from meat and do Friday penances. Plus, I think the fast before Holy Communion applies to all communicants; not just those over 18/under 60.
 
For a good July 4 penance as an alternative to abstaining from meat, you could catch fireworks in your teeth!
