Dear Brothers and Sisters,

Sorry not to have put a reminder on the Forum yesterday concerning First Friday but I wonder how many Catholics today remember to offer Reparation to the Sacred Heart of First Fridays every month, or offer reparation to the Immaculate Heart of Mary on First Saturdays of every month.

As a young child, I can remember my cousin faithfully taking me to Mass on First Fridays and then later as an Adult being devoted to both the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary. Still am. However it seems to me there has been a slow but steady decline in both devotions.

In fact it seems to go deeper than merely a particular devotion to Jesus and Mary, it seems in many parishes there is a decline in Reverence in general towards Jesus and Mary, manifested in the attitudes toward Mass, Eucharist and Mary.
Hopefully today there are still many fervent Catholics who are offering Reparation for sins of our own as well as the sins of the world.

I’m on my second try at the 9 First Fridays. Last time I am not sure if I fulfilled all 9 because on the 9th Friday there was an ice storm and the Mass I had planned to go to was cancelled when I arrived at the church. I did a Holy Hour at home with a Spiritual Communion as is suggested for situations like that, and I received 2 communions on the next day (Saturday), but I am not sure it “counted”. So I am doing them over again. Up to 3 now.

I have managed to complete 5 First Saturdays twice and on the third set now.

I know I have said this before but I’m not seeing this decline in reverence. I see many more Marian devotions at churches now than I did during the 70s, 80s and 90s. Miraculous Medal novenas, May Crownings, Perpetual Help Novenas, Two Hearts devotions (this is where you go to church on First Friday evening, stay up all night and go to the First Saturday Mass after midnight, with time for confessions, adoration, rosaries and other prayers in between) and many other devotions are all around. People like Fr. Heilman are even promoting the saying of the Angelus/ Regina Coeli again.

I’m sorry if you don’t see this where you live. I was very happy to see it all going on when I returned to active practice in 2015. Like I said, during the 80s, 90s etc all these things seemed to be shoved aside and the only devotion we were supposed to be doing was Bible study. I think reading scripture is important too, but it does not mean we should get rid of everything else.
