Can an E.M.H.C from another parish of the same Diocese assist the Priest with the distribution of Holy Communion when there are no E.M.H.C’s available from our own parish.

Also same question regarding a E.M.H.C from another Diocese.

I ask because our Priest requested a E.M.H.C to help assist and there were non from my parish present, so a gentleman approached the Altar and assisted with the distribution of Holy Communion.

Or he could have been a permanent Deacon from another parish or Diocese on a visit, then wouldn’t he need permission from the Bishop if he was from another Diocese?

The priest may in extraordinary circumstance (great number of faithful so as to unreasonably delay the service of the Mass) create extraordinary ministers of the Holy Eucharist for that occassion. Any EMHC regardless of practical jurisdiction can in such circumstances be chosen by the priest to perform their ministerial function. While a peramenant deacon may in fact require approval of the local diocese bishop to excercise his diaconate, his temporary assumption of EMHC responsibilities would probably not.

Please note that ministerial jurisdiction varies from diocese to diocese with in one diocese EMHCs being commissioned for only a specific parish, while in others the EMHCs are commissioned for all parishes in the diocese.

Hope this helps. 👍

The Pastor has the ability when really necessary to allow any Catholic in good standing to assist with Holy Communion for that one Mass. I myself have assisted at Mass in several different parishes and diocese. Even conducting Communion services in a few instances when no priest was available for scheduled Mass.
