Lately, I have been feeling very irritable. And honestly, I can not figure out why. A friend told me today to not sweat the small stuff. And that is when it hit me, the small stuff I use to be able to let go of just irritates me. And I honestly don’t know why. There have been no major changes in my life.

Just curious but does this happen to other people?

Angie

It might be related to a change in diet and lifestyle [sleep/excercise].

Or it could be little things adding up… When “little” issues aren’t resolved well, they can build up until a person snaps. Perhaps it doesn’t happen all at once, but frustration usually comes out somehow.

Perhaps it’s stress from a situation that’s going on in your life right now. It might not be new or something major, but deep down, it bothers you.

Letting things roll off of you, is a neat saying. Sometimes we find it easier to do it than other times, and some people just seem to be naturally better at it.

But we all get irritable and anxious at times. And doesn’t it always amount to forgetting that God knows that we are dealing with stuff, and that we should trust Him?

That’s where I would focus if I were you. It’s simple, and it’s true. Keep reminding yourself about it.

Dear Lord, if Angie has been working too hard and not had enough relaxation, please help her to remedy this.
If there is some underlying even hidden ill-health, please help her to discover.
Please help her because she only wants to live as You wish.
Thanking You in hope and trust.

Maybe it has to do with warmer weather?

I would think Virga is on the right track.
Maybe you’re low on a vitamin – E, D, C?
Not prescribing, just suggesting to ask your doctor.
Are you getting a half hour of exercise every day? When I don’t I get antsy.
Enough sleep? Stress relievers, like talking with friends, doing something you enjoy?

It might be perimenopause–hormones can make a big difference in one’s ability to deal with irritation. And perimenopause can start surprisingly early.

Well, one thing that has been bugging me more is my relationship with my mom. We have always been very close. Nonetheless, there is a generation gap and the reality that 2 people will always have 2 different opinions. Lately it seems any topic I bring up, she has to play the devils advocate. It seems instead of a friendly conversation we end up debating things that really don’t matter.

Ever since my dad died 4 years ago, I treat my mom like a china doll. At first is because she was grieving and I was willing to do anything to make her life better. Now it is because I am realizing she won’t be around much longer.

That is DEFINETLY a big one. I live in Canada and I LOVE my snow:D

I never enjoyed summer, even as a kid the sun just annoyed me. And the weather has been what other people would call ‘nice’ lately, but I find it just gives me a headache

I am all for bringing my every single problem to God in prayer. And the fact that I do not have very many deeply Catholic or even Christian friends has been bugging me as well. When I say deeply, I mean people who want to bring every aspect of their lives to God. I know we are all sinners. If someone is struggling with sin yet constantly seeking out God’s help, I would stick to that person like glue. However people who simply attend church and then roll their eyes at me when I actually try to live out my faith are not the people I seek out to help me grow spiritually.

As much as the Catholic church is suppose to be a communion of people, I don’t think it is always prudent to share with them

I have noticed that I get into these bad moods. It started about ten years ago and now it happens every so often. Peri menopause or Menopause ,maybe. Vitamin deficiency maybe. I take a very good brand of multivitamin and I do feel better for taking them.

But I know for me the most likely culprit is stress. So I try to get whatever is stressing me dealt with as soon as possible.

You mention your mom was getting on your nerves, maybe you need a little break from your regular conversation routine or keep the conversation shorter if possible for now.
It’s a shame that you just can’t tell her “mom your contrariness is wearing me down.” I have a mom who says similar things to me so I know where you are coming from.

I use lemon balm oil to calm me down but don’t waste your money because I think it’s just a placebo effect that happens to work for me. But if you have anything that does make you feel less irritated, like the smell of lavender, a good hot bath , a nice cup of tea. If you’re inclined to exercise, maybe a run, read a good book. I hope this helps.

I have never heard of that, what is it?

Actually, lately, the only time I felt joy lately was when I was reading a book (that I returned to the library) about the Catholic faith. The funny thing is, I can barely remember what was in the book or the actually topic, just that I felt great peace and comfort.

I’d go to the Doctor and have a full workup done.
God bless.

You’ve already got some good replies. It can be stress or tiredness (e.g. too much work, frustration) or some physical factors like temperature, light, food etc.

Are you getting enough sleep, taking vitamins, exercising, and are things OK with work and family?

Maybe you need a little pampering for yourself, such as a mani/pedi…

I hope you feel better soon. :hug1:

Consider:
  1. Diet. Check out “The Brain Maker” for a review of how dietary / environmental choices effect the nervous system.
  2. Exercise: Exercise, and especially stretching is a great stress reliever.
  3. Meditation: I do this in part because I am curious, and in part because I have to be able to work calmly under stress. Christian meditation seems to help (Lectio Divina). Of course, avoid unnecessary stress.
  4. Sleep.
  5. Recreation: Do something fun.
  6. See a doctor if you don’t get better.
Good luck.

Sorry to hear that. It’s hard enough adjusting to parents becoming weaker, both mentally and physically, in their senior years, but it’s even more difficult when you have a trying relationship during that time.

You’ll be in my prayers.

This is a stressor–that is, losing your dad and feeling as if you are going to lose your mother soon, too.

Is it possible that she’s beginning to find your kid gloves irritating or patronizing? Maybe she’s trying to goad you into being your more normal self again, instead of acting as if you are now the parent and she is the child who needs protection from harsh conversation? She may feel as if she’s being infantilized or that you have her on the death watch. That is kind of a creepy thing to go through, if you put yourself in her place.

At any rate, these debates may be the kind of friendly conversation she wants, rather than idle conversations where your opinions never really get challenged. I suppose I’d try a few tacks that are a little more along the lines you used to act or the way you act around other adults, at any rate, and see how that goes. It ought to be less stressful on both you and her if you’d relax on the china doll thing a bit.
