Baby’s due December 17 and I was wondering how soon after birth should I start taking baby out of the house? Has anyone ever missed Mass due to birth to wait for baby’s immune system to strengthen as it will be flu season in full swing then? Or should I just proceed business as usual and just cover up baby when we go to Mass? I’ve never had a winter baby and never thought twice about going out with baby right away.

Thank you for any (name removed by moderator)ut. Peace.

I just go out as usual as soon as I feel like it. I’ve never had a winter baby, but I’ve had two spring and one fall. I do think the fall baby got sick a few more times that first winter than his older brothers, but that was also the year my oldest started preschool, so everybody had more exposure to germs. Everybody else got a flu shot, I covered baby up well when we went out, and we washed our hands frequently. If there had been an outbreak of something or if it had been exceptionally cold, we would have stayed home.

Remote start (or access to an attached garage) is really helpful for drives because the car is not so cold. I also got a neat fleece coverup for the carseat for my youngest (the older kids were out of the infant seats by their first winter.) He stayed pretty toasty in there. 👍

Had a December baby - went out as soon as I felt up to it.

For mass, sat in rear pew on the belief that most coughs, sneezes, whatever would be directed forward since that’s the direction we’re facing 90% of the time 😃 Also abstained from shaking hands during sign of peace (held baby and just made eye contact / nodded).

I had a March baby and she was baptized the second Sunday we weren’t in the hospital. We didn’t make it every week. Don’t push yourself if you don’t feel recovered enough. Also, people at our church were very respectful and didn’t try to touch her or hold her. If people were very grabby, we would have been more reluctant to make the effort.

January baby. Couldn’t wait to take her out. Was nursing, she was seldom ill.
Congratulations on your beautiful child!

December baby. Went back after about 2 weeks. Like other posters said, we sat in the back, but I give off enough of a don’t-come-close vibe too, so that helped. Babywearing was helpful also.

Luckily, we just moved to a new state last month and we don’t know anyone at our parish. We sit in the back pew and it should be pretty easy to keep baby away from others around us. I just wasn’t sure if it would be too soon to resume attending Mass once we return home from the hospital. Or if I should have the Holy Eucharist brought to me at home.

5 babies so far. Once released from hospital we resumed normal life with all of them. Including stopping at the grocery store on the way home and once, Mass on the way home. It all depends on how mom is feeling and how healthy baby is. Don’t do what you aren’t comfortable with but there is no need to be scared of the world either. Since the dawn of man, babies have been born and grew up. It’s how we survive. And while we do want to make sure we are care if our children in the safest way possible, sometimes it’s good to step back for some perspective.

Same here, tho mine were both early November babies.

Since the dawn of time, many babies have been born and haven’t grown up, too.

Different situations for different people, and all that, but our church is absolutely packed to the rafters at every Sunday Mass. There isn’t a way to get even a little space around us where there aren’t people, and there are a lot of kids and elderly folks. As a result, I don’t bring babies to Sunday Mass until they’re baptized, around the 2-4 week mark.

Right now, both our kids have RSV, a virus that resembles the common cold in healthy older kids and adults but can be deadly in babies and the elderly. It’s extremely contagious. In DD, age 2, it turned into a nasty ear infection that kept her up for a couple of nights crying from pain. DS is 4 months old. We have to suction him every few hours to keep him clear enough that he isn’t choking. He’s been perfectly healthy 'til now, and is, thank God, recovering. Other babies aren’t so lucky.

My babies were both born in the summer, did everything as usual, first baby took a 3 hr flight home when he was just 2 weeks, he was the tiniest passenger on that flt. Also took him every morning outdoors as I would go for a short walk. Second baby was out with me on day three, at a restaurant enjoying my fav food ! Never hesitated to take them out. I used the baby slings.

I have no real motherly advice, but I little dad advice,
Please learn how to hold & Handle a baby correctly,
Sometimes I see parents act like there holding a rag Doll ,
A baby need to be held correctly with proper head &. Neck support …
And if in or out of a stroller , please oh please have the shade down,
I see babies looking directly to the sun, that really bugs me when I see that,

This scare mongering and shaming others needs to stop. If you don’t want to take your baby out then don’t. You need not justify your decision with fear.

I am always suprised at the mommy wars. I shouldn’t be.

Op: Do what you feel comfortable with. If that is staying home, fine, enjoy your snuggles. If that is attending Mass on Christmas Eve at st Patrick’s. Then do that.

Above all, ask your health care provider.

There are these amazing car seat covers like this

Different styles, different brands different prices. My son was born dec 15 as was I. We didn’t miss anything and all my kids have loved the car seat covers! I highly recommend them.

In today’s world it’s 90 seconds from a warm car to a warm building so exposure is not something that is too much of a problem.

I’m not a big germophobe. I figure spouse goes to work, or just to the store to get food. Uses the bathroom (ever seen a men’s room floor?) comes home walks on carpet. Baby blanket is on carpet… Baby survives and Mass doesn’t seem that bad all of a sudden! 😉

That being said, if you do go out. Be mindful of coughers, or grubby hands, or well meaning people trying to touch the baby! Our 5th flew from Indiana back to our home in the northwest for baptism at 2 weeks.

I have one winter child and I agree - just go out as soon as you feel comfortable with it.

My babies were late fall. I never had a problem taking them out. The both mostly stayed in their seats during most outings. If you have a vaginal delivery, you may feel fine after a few days, if you have a C-section, it may hurt to lift the baby in his seat. Everyone’s recovery is different. Also, if the baby has any complications that might effect strength and immunity, or if the temps are extra frigid, that might make a difference.

We had one of those, but it had a little hole for the baby to look out and get oxygen. They’re also great when they get to the binky and sock throwing stage. You can keep everything in the carseat!

Yes, be sure to ask your doctor for guidance on lifting things. I had a section and was not allowed to carry the baby in her car seat because it would have been too heavy. I think that was for two months?
