Like the title says, I just found it yesterday 🤷. I think it was from a retreat I went on. I’m really curious about its properties and how there are different colored scapulars. I know that you should get it blessed by a priest, but I don’t know if this was already blessed on the retreat. How do I use it? Anything I should know about it? I know it can save you from hell, but most things I’ve read about it are kind of vague. And the praying to receive its benefits seems confusing… So any explanation would be much appreciated, thanks! šŸ˜‰

Do you remember being enrolled? If you were enrolled, you should be: wearing the scapular constantly; reciting the Little Office of the Blessed Virgin Mary OR a Rosary every day; and living chastely according to your state of life (married or single). Furthermore, if you need to replace it (which you will - they wear out) you do not need to get the new scapular blessed.

If you were not enrolled and you want to be, you can speak to a priest. It is a very short ceremony that must be done by a priest. Like the habit of a nun, the brown scapular is a sign that shows your devotion to your faith.

Our Lady gave the brown scapular to St. Simon Stock. It’s a very long story šŸ™‚ but the short version is that she promised that ā€œwhosoever dies wearing this scapular shall not suffer eternal fire.ā€ Don’t see it as a superstition (ā€œif I wear this, I’m definitely going to Heavenā€) but as a holy reminder to be devoted to the scapular.

Go to a Priest, get enrolled, put it on, say the prayers associated with it and enjoy. Maybe God was trying to tell you something by having you find it.šŸ‘

I cannot recommend the brown scapular devotion enough. It has really changed my life for the better.

A brown scapular of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel is not like a medal or a Rosary…the devout is invested in the Scapular by a priest (formerly, only by a member of the Carmelite order) using the proper Rite and the blessing remains with the person - although I still ask priests to bless my new scapular before I wear it. Usually this is done in parishes on July 16, but you may mention it to a priest at any time.

The brown scapular was the sacramental that helped bring me back to the Church! Wear it and cherish it.

Please pray for me.

I wear a white Dominican scapular. Previous to this, the red scapular of the Passion.
