Jane - no, I am not suggesting we be unreasonable. But I think we are all tempted when encountering these folks either to try & get along with them (I mean they are fellow Christians) or to try & be polite & accommodating - which puts us on the defensive from the get go. For example, I very politely would not really let this man talk about what he wanted to - I talked about what I wanted to, ie 32,000 sects; how the Catholic faith has truth, etc. these folks often I suspect have a script or a few set points and they probably are a lot less sure of themselves when they are forced to immediately go off script. When we let them stick to the script we let them control the debate and let them talk about things they are well versed in.

Ok, that makes more sense.

Personally, I find getting people “off script” is a very good thing. My favorite way to do it is to share an experience in my life and ask them to share an experience as well. It puts everything on even footing, and reminds the person that you someone to be talked with and not talked at.

That’s one thing that n-Cs often use …their personal testimony/conversion story. I have found that it is also something that we Catholics have difficulty expressing, but it is important that we give it some thought and perhaps take a few minutes to sit down and write it out. Here is a link to an example: My Testimony

It is one thing that no one can refute or counter because it’s concrete and personal. If one is smart enough to cite scripture that was important to parts for your conversion journey, so much the better because n-Cs have their SS hangup and many believe that our Catholic faith cannot be supported from scripture and that we don’t know it or read it.

Don’t be surprised if they bail like PG’s guy did when they see they cannot handle you. 😃

I have had the “mother-God” questions posed to me before. Though the man who I encountered asked if I knew that I had a “heavenly mother”. He was shocked when I responded “yes and her name is Mary”. I then quickly asked him which Came first the bible or the Church? He responded “God came first”. I just smiled and asked if he wanted to sit down and discuss scripture but he walked away. Does anyone know which group this is that tends to ask about “mother-God”? I regret not being more receptive so I could have asked what his background was.

I haven’t encountered that one (yet) but it sounds like some sort of new age belief.

People like that are not really interested in anything more than drive by pot shots and (IMO) are just as well let go. I believe that anyone that the Holy Spirit has sent my way to share with will be prepared to listen and really dialog.

I just remembered that last month when we went to “Gallery Night” downtown I ran into several different clusters of street witnesses asking if I wanted the tracts they were handing out. I looked and said no thank you when I saw it was https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipe...as_Your_Life.gif/220px-This_Was_Your_Life.gif.
I very quickly pointed out that I was well familiar with Jack Chick’s materials and as a Catholic I urged each one to come to CA and read The Nightmare World of Jack T. Chick to see what the truth is vs what they were handing out. They all looked pretty dismayed and went their way. Sadly I had left my Catholic tracts back in the car or I would have sought to engage in some counter evangelism, but all was not lost because I ran into a group from St. Paul Street Evangelization who were great fellowship and when I asked if those guys had come by and talked to them, they smiled and said yes and that they did their part for sharing the faith, which did my heart good. 🙂

Millitant,

Mind if I ask why you thought you couldn’t evangelize without your tracks?

Hi Jane! 👋

Oh, I can and did…but it is handy and a bit more effective to be able to leave these folks with something tangible to take and consider at their leisure, especially since my preferred tract is God’s Love for You which is (IMO) one of the best evangelistic tracts I’ve ever seen.

I can articulate my faith though as you can see from My Testimony

Well said. 👍

What is “Gallery night?” Street evangelization?
Hardly…🙂 It’s essentially become a monthly street party in the downtown area that includes free admission to the local art gallery (always fun) and several bands and music and food and drink in a pretty easy going and safe atmosphere.

The local SPSE guys have been down there sharing the Catholic faith and giving away tracts and Rosaries.

Thanks! Sound like fun!

👍 Lots of walking, but yeah, it is and there’s always a chance to share with someone…

As Hillare Belloc expressed so poetically:

***The Catholic Sun

Wherever the Catholic sun doth shine,
There’s laughter and dancing and good red wine.
At least I’ve always found it so.
Benedicamus Domino!***

…Thoughts, anyone? The whole exchange was respectful. Please recall I was totally unprepared for this: I was minding my own business; reading a book on military history; and I didn’t know this man from James. That said, I’ve never had that much fun in the past month.
Given the circumstances, I think you handled the situation very well. Keep up the good work!

I was minding my own business in a bookstore this evening when I got accosted by a total stranger who turned out to be virulent anti-Catholic. I would solicit readers’ thoughts on the encounter. I have posted often but this is my first thread in well over 2 years’ membership. I hope this is placed on the correct thread; if not, the mods can move it as they see fit.

Anyways, a well-dressed man, 40-ish, walked up to me as I was reading a book and asked me if I could answer a question. He said he was a student. Ok, I agreed. He asked if I was aware that the Bible had concept of the “mother” God, i.e., a feminine view of God. I realized immediately he was a prosletyzer. I have always viewed Catholics as needing to be able to defend their beliefs, under the theory that we never know what seeds we plant with others – so I engaged him:

–He asked about what Bible I read. I told him that I read the New Catholic Bible since the Catholic Church gave us the Bible, and I was very comfortable and sure that the Catholic faith offered truth. He asked about my view of the Bible. I said it was the inspired word of God – and that we needed a teaching Church to interpret it, since there were 32,000 sects of Protestantism, all of whom claimed to know what the Bible meant.

–He asked if I would be interested in attending a Bible Study. I responded that I would be interested if he would be interested in attending a Catholic mass with me.

–He said, “I spent 16 years in Catholic churches.” I asked him: Why did you leave? He didn’t answer. I asked again. He changed the subject. I asked a third time. He said, “I’m being respectful.” I said, “so am I, and I see you want me to answer your questions, but you won’t answer mine, so why did you leave?” He began to edge away and said, “do you know who controls the Catholic Church?” I said, “Jesus Christ!” He said, “Satan!” and turned to leave. I said, “God bless you!” as he walked way.

You know, this kind of thing hasn’t ever really happened to me (someone randomly approaching me in public to evangelize me)… not like in your story anyway… but the reason I wish it would is because, well, firstly I like to engage people with this stuff because it’s important to me. But also… I feel like I would like to ask them if they want to sit down for a coffee and talk about it. You know, welcome them in a way that makes them know you want to hear what they have to say, and to discuss it with them.

It just seems to me that these people have a passion that is akin to my own, which is why they’re out there talking to people, and rather than making it about a two-minute one-upmanship session, I’d love to really engage and have a good dialogue. Unfortunately, this kind of thing doesn’t really happen up here in Canada. People are too polite. 😃

“While those who give scandal are guilty of the spiritual equivalent of murder, those who take scandal—who allow scandals to destroy their faith—are guilty of spiritual suicide.”
St. Francis de Sales
Nice find in the treasury of the Church. 🙂 It’s very useful in our time… guilty of spiritual suicide - that’s a good one. Lately, people who have left the Church have been running into me - not me into them. Yes, I understand the scandals have been difficult - but - I like that come back - spiritual suicide. I’m going to memorize this one. 👍 That’s one mayor reason for people leaving and another one is ‘guilt’ - that the Church made them and their family live with ‘guilt.’ I was once even accused of belonging to a ‘guilt religion.’ I appreciate the scandal effects but ‘guilt’ - I don’t really get it - all people need to do is repent and confess. 🤷
