My husband and I went to the courthouse yesterday morning and were married at 10 am. We plan on having the ceremony sometime next fall or spring depending on money. We are so excited for what the future holds. I never thought I would be married already, but we knew what we wanted and went for it. I’m just so thrilled I can’t contain my excitement 😃

If you’re not Catholic, congratulations!

If you are Catholic, you’re not married yet. Go talk to your pastor about this.

Married in the sense of legal with the state and until our priest recovers from his stroke we currently don’t have anyone to marry us.

God bless you both.

P.S. You are spending your honeymoon here at Catholic Answers Forums? 😃

Does it cost more to get married by the Church than the courthouse in Illinois where you live? In Australia, the cost is only what you choose to give to the priest as a donation.

Many, many congratulations, but see your Priest as soon as possible .❤️

And you are telling us this on a Catholic site…just what kind of reactions are you looking for?

We got married in the Bahamas and then some years later we had a ‘blessing’ in our Catholic church. That was superb!

I hate to rain on your parade, but if either of you are Catholic and married without the appropriate dispensation you are NOT married in the eyes of the Catholic Church. Is your Church no longer having mass due to your priest’s stroke, and are their no other priests within hundreds of miles of your Church? If that were the case, you could’ve applied for a dispensation.

I wish you well. I do hope your diocese has offered you a supply priest until your own recovers. I will pray for him.

Please call the diocese office of family life Monday and ask how you can have your civil marriage blessed. I presume you were already going through marriage prep and so can have a simple wedding ceremony ASAP. Perhaps even at the cathedral. It doesn’t have to be an expensive event, but it will start your married life off so much better. You can have a big party later.

I think a simple ceremony, with just a few friends and immediate family would be very romantic. And having those graces is so important!

I’ve seen the advice given to have a nice anniversary party. I’ve always wanted to do that, as we had a very inexpensive, very, very small wedding, but haven’t gotten around to it yet. With an anniversary party, there isn’t the same pressure to invite every 1st grade chum, college roommate, coworker, 2nd cousin, great uncle, and all your parents’ friends.

Option 1 you could have found another priest.
Option 2 you could have waited. You are not married.

Dear OP,

Would you like to share how your relationship developed? You sound as though you are surprised yourself!

I note from other threads that you are a relatively recent catholic convert and that you live in a relatively large parish. We are struggling to understand why you chose the courthouse and not the church?

Best wishes.

Looks like you did not get married yesterday.😦 And you could potentially be in mortal sin. I am unaware in the state you live in where there could be a situation in which a priest could not be made available to you.🤷 Please seek a priest, go to confession and refrain from committing a sin further by living like a married couple. I sense another shoe to drop. Something about the state and it’s marriage power or lack thereof…

I had no idea you could get a priest’s blessing I will look into that. There is only one local parish in the area and the situation of when he will return is up in the air as of now. The other parishes require that you be a member before you do a wedding ceremony and I know some only let you register on certain days of the month and with my husband’s work of being a trucker on the road it’s going to be a doozy to get registered at the same time if he’s not home unless the church will allow an exception as long as I have his information. Is it typically allowed that you hold memberships in more than one church?

“Blessing” really does not give the proper perspective on the matter. You can’t just walk into a Church and have your marriage “blessed,” because you have not received the sacrament of marriage in the first place.

The situation being referred to is called a convalidation, which is receiving the sacrament of marriage. The only difference between the two is that the convalidation deals with the situation where the couple is civilly married, but the civil marriage is not recognized by the Catholic Church. It is treated essentially the same as marriage because it is marriage: you will be required to supply the necessary paperwork, prove you are free to marry, attend marriage preparation, etc. A few other documents will be required due to the civil marriage.

The Catholic Church cannot deny a couple the sacrament of marriage to a couple unless there is good reason to do so. A priest on indefinite leave is NOT a reason for denial. The easiest thing to do is simply go to the next-nearest parish and discuss the situation, or call the diocese.

They ARE married. A “legal” marriage is a marriage. They have not had a “sacramental” marriage. I imagine your intention was to distinguish between legal and sacramental. However, to tell someone who is legally married that “You are not married” is insensitive at best.

Do you extend that to homosexual “marriages” as well. 🤷 From a Catholic perspective they are not married.
