Nine of the twelve months feature an image of Pope Francis. Frankly, while I submit to the authority of the Holy Father, this is quite the contrast of the media’s portrayal of a simple and humble Pope Francis. I don’t know who put the calendar together but I see more of a look at me moment. Does anyone else feel this way or am I totally off base? I don’t think I will be hanging it in my house. (Ready for whatever backlash)

Do you actually think that Pope Francis orchestrated a “look at me moment”? Of course not. Whoever publishes the calendar is capitalizing on the immense popularity of His Holiness.

^^^^^ This.

It’s about the publisher, pure and simple.
It’s about marketing, plain and simple, and has ZERO to do with the Holy Father. Zero.

Around my area, the Catholic calendars given out in churches are invariably supplied by funeral homes, whose “handy number” is prominently displayed. They in turn bulk purchase these from a supplier who does the custom imprinting. Guessing the supplier had a variety to choose from, and the church in question for whatever reason chose one that was “Pope Francis intensive.” The Holy Father had nothing to do with this, and would probably be embarrassed.

As has been pointed out, the Pope has nothing to do with this. The pastor or someone he designated picked out the style - there are usually a few to choose from. Our calendar is mostly classic religious art. One year the English version was more “modern” with nature scenes while the Spanish one was the classic art. The parish ended up with a big surplus of English calendars that year. 😃 Father has been careful to make sure that both versions he orders are classic since then. I have never actually seen one given out at a parish that uses contemporary real-life people, let alone repeated images of the same person (unless it was Jesus or Mary).

The Holy Father doesn’t put out calendars, and may be completely unaware that someone is using his likeness on a calendar. The publisher likes him very much, obviously, but I doubt the Holy Father is receiving any modeling fees from the sale of the calendar.

Lets get real for a minute. The pope has nothing to do with what publishers print on their calendars. 🤷

The souvenir sellers near the Vatican will be happy to sell you any number of different calendars featuring the Pope in various smiling pictures. It’s just what sells! People like pics of the Pope, I’m sure there were as many calendars featuring the last Pope and others before him. 🙂

Hopefully you found something to rejoice about today. 🙂

BTW,

What is an “official Catholic calendar”?
Since I don’t think the church does Imprimaturs for calendars, I assumed by “official” was meant the typical church-distributed calendar that shows holy days, identifies what each Sunday is, maybe the liturgical color, abstinence days, etc.

I was wondering the same thing.

Ours come from the local funeral home which orders them from some publishing house or distributor. The funeral home has their logo and phone number printed on it and gives them to the local Catholic Churches. It is very nice of the funeral home to do this but at the end of the day they are advertisements.

If anything qualifies as the “Official” calendar then it is the Order of Mass or Ordo.

I got my “official” calendar last week as well, but it features photographs (mostly exterior and a couple interior) of various churches within the diocese. It has most of the things Tarpeian Rock notes, and is very nice. 🙂

In my diocese many of the pictures have the Pope in them as well. I am sure he has no idea. Just that whomever printed the calendar knows how much we admire him so they chose to use his photographs due to his popularity. He’s so popular because he declines the special treatment people in ‘authority’ so often desire. Ironic.

If you don’t have an official Catholic calendar, but a different one, is the one you have valid but not licit?

Frankly, as a traditionalist - I’m offended by these Gregorian calendars handed out in churches! These things are published by dyed-in-the-microfiber liberals! Only the Julian calendar should be considered valid and I am patiently waiting for a Motu that will authorize its reprise! Those 11 minutes annually are worth fighting for!

In the meantime, I am forming my own cult and declare the current version to be kalendae vacante!

😃
